I knew Jimmy Greaves was a good player, but didn't realise how good. Brilliant documentary on him last night. Only disappointing bit for me was when he turned to punditry. They said Jimmy could be controversial, then showed a clip of him saying he didn't rate Gerry Francis. Scoffed at him being captain of England. Don't know whether Jimmy was ever sober when Gerry was in his pomp. No Hoddle or Gascoigne, but Gerry was one of the best midfielders in the Country in his day

Controversial doesn't mean right, and Greaves was wrong about Gerry and quite a lot of other things. Saint and Greavsie used to make me cringe TBH. Bloody good player though.

I quite liked Saint and Greavsie at the time but I was young and naive back then.

It was required viewing every Saturday lunchtime along with BBC's "On The Ball" with Brian Moore.
Didn't Greavsie coin the phrases "It's a funny old game" and "It's a game of two halves"?

I saw in a summary of his career many years ago that he only ever scored once against QPR. It was a diving header attempt at the school end which he failed to reach and he slyly punched it in... right in front of me.

Other than staying onside I don't think he ever left the eighteen yard box during a game LOL. He was called a goal poacher then, he would just be a lazy cunt now and needs his arse kicking. He was also one of the best finishers I have ever seen but I don't think he ever got over being dropped from the WC final team as it was felt that Hurst was a harder worker.

He was a brilliant striker, first to go to Italy.
Onna piss for many years. Some say it all went wrong for him when Alf left him out of the 66 WC squad and we all know what happened next. Alf got that right, he never picked injured or recovering players even in the squad (a few people in rugby and football could learn from that), but it did JG's head in.

I thought he picked up injury during the tournament? With Hurst only getting his chance in the later rounds. What a twist of fate.

I do know that Alf never picked anyone who wasn't a guaranteed 100%.

From wiki: "At the World Cup he played all three group games against Uruguay, Mexico and France, however, in the win against France, midfielder Joseph Bonnel racked his studs down Greaves' shin, causing a wound that required 14 stitches and left a permanent scar.[86] His replacement for the quarter-final against Argentina, Geoff Hurst, scored the only goal of the game and kept his place all the way to the final, where Hurst scored a hat-trick as England won the tournament.[74] Greaves was fit to play in the final, but manager Alf Ramsey opted against changing a winning team.[87] Only the 11 players on the pitch at the end of the 4–2 win over West Germany received medals. Following a Football Association-led campaign to persuade FIFA to award medals to all the winners' squad members, Greaves was presented with his medal by Gordon Brown at a ceremony at 10 Downing Street on 10 June 2009.[88] In November 2014, Greaves' medal was sold at auction for £44,000.[89]"

Great player Greaves, played between the posts and delivered. If you could modernise him he'd get in the City side - every time De Bruyne put him in it would be a goal. Spurs could do with him now😁 On the other hand, I went to an evening with him and Ron Harris - what a load of bollox that was. Came across as a couple of old gits who didn't know when to call it a day. Sad.
