As I’m sure you’ll all agree, we have become quite a tightly knit community over the last year or so. Long standing friendships, built up over many years elsewhere and continuing on here, along with a few new arrivals who have joined us.
Quite clearly, the current crisis has created unprecedented times as far as us lot are concerned. And because of that, I thought it might be nice to temporarily at least, offer something slightly different to what we have known so far. Partly because it could be interesting and fun, but just as importantly, it could give us all an opportunity to offer solidarity and support to each other during this worrying period.
I ran this past Stanley yesterday, who also thought it could be of use, so hopefully others will find it of potential interest.
And then I saw Westy’s post about missing the pub.
So we decided to open up THE ISLAND ARMS ! A virtual pub solely for our current regulars who have been deprived of their usual camaraderie and interaction with their Rangers mates. And one where we can all safely observe our responsibilities in relation to social distancing.
Like many of us, my wife’s business is going to have to adapt during this period and I noticed that she was engaged in an online meeting the other day, without the need to travel or run the risk of being infected by someone. It occurred to me that we too could use the technology available these days, but rather than host business meetings, we could have somewhere to go for a chat and an alternative to watching the news!
Obviously, it would be important to ensure that these meetings would be entirely secure and only accessible to members of this forum, as not everyone wants to be known publicly. In fact, for those that would prefer it, one doesn’t have to have their camera enabled and can participate solely by voice, recognisable by an avatar only. And I should also point out that no offence will be taken should people not want to join in, as we appreciate it’s not everybody’s thing.
There are many things to consider before putting this in place, not least the opening times! I think that we can hold meetings up to 40 mins free of charge, so maybe a few a day which could be scheduled well in advance in order to give people the chance to participate.
Due to the nature of my work 😄, I can’t guarantee to be able to host these myself necessarily, so we may need several part time bar staff to ensure it’s viability. Applications welcome, but without 80% of your pay!!
Posting this now, as I notice things becoming a little tetchy on another thread.
Please reply to this thread if you are interested, in order for me to see if it’s an idea worth investigating further.
