Ah yes, Emile Heskey, the original false 9..... Good link up player, could drag defenders out of position. The main thing he has in common with Dykes is that neither are really out and out box merchants (madam).

There is a difference between a "False 9" and a striker that never scores! 😂

There is a difference between a "False 9" and a striker that never scores! 😂 but Heskey played like a modern false 9, that was the point.... and he also had prolonged periods without scoring. Just like our boy, whose best work is also outside the box.

I think we're losing a bit of perspective with Dykes based on a reasonable 45 mins against Millwall. I hope he comes good, I hope he buries the Fakes tomorrow, but the fact remains it's the end of March ffs, he's played in nearly every game and he has ONE goal from open play - if he was a kid everyone would be screaming for him to be sent out on loan to learn the game. And for a player who has no positional sense and a poor first touch to be considered for a deeper role or MF is bizarre. I hope that playing with Charlie eventually has a positive effect on him and his Scotland call up gives him a boost.

If you read the original posts in this thread, especially mine and 73's, they pose the question has Warburton's coaching ruined him or was he just a flash in the pan?

Given the proper coaching you could turn Dykes from a £1.5 million player into a £10,£15 eventually a £20 million player. He could reach the same levels as Mitrovic of Fulham, at least, within a couple of seasons, pretty quickly. If you know how to do it. Resurrected as a nod to Comic Relief today.... 😁

This is quite an interesting question Alan. Let's be honest, from day one Dykes hasn't really looked like Warburton's type of player. A bit more old school number 9 than the sort of footballer you'd assume Warburton would want.

For large spells BOS and Chair I.e. refused to pass to him. I`m not sure that did his confidence any good.

Also has to be said that once crosses do come in he's usually in the wrong place to attack them. Austin doesn't have a problem.

A bit more old school number 9 than the sort of footballer youd assume Warburton would want. Ironical really considering the very first thing Warburton did was ditch Big Smith as being surplus to requirements, the arrogance of it..... Mind you that was back when he still thought playing out come what may was the answer. The thing that no one at the club understood is that Dykes isn't a 9 at all.

Hoping he gets a bit of confidence now and starts to find the net more between now and the end of the season.

Happy for Dykes. He's done very well last couple of games. Seems a real confidence player though. Totally different player when his heads down.

Pleased to see he's on the bench tonight - though would like him to get 20-30 minutes.
Last international window he was seen as the new Scotland saviour - usual ridiculous media hype.
Let's hope he gets his head right, has realistic expectations for club and country and gets down to some hard work with Chas before he goes back tot West Brom (if he goes back of course...).

Pleased for Dykes and hope he carries it on for the rest of the season. 1st goal yesterday was a very good header and his all round game has been good these last 6 games or so.

Can’t help thinking he would have preferred to use his middle finger for some of our fans.

Most of us fans, to be fair. Personally, I was close to lose faith in him completly. To be fair to you Shania, fans have a right to be critical and voice an opinion. And let’s face it, his goal scoring record wasn’t anywhere near where you want a strikers to be. A few fans went too far with their criticism though, as they usually do while hiding behind a keyboard.
