i don’t think it’s necessarily Critchleys tactics the decline started under beale. The goals and attacking braveness dried up dykes is to blame imo. he's so shit. i've said it time and time again that modern strikers don't need to be the goalscorers of old to influence the team, its good if they do but the days of poachers are long gone. what they need to do is lead the line and upset defences. dykes doesn't lead the line and no defender would be scared playing against him. i honestly don't get why we've stuck with him for so long. he's absolutely awful. Agree. You’ve only got to look at Bradshaw at wall. Scores next to fuck all but watched them against Watford yesterday and he ran their two centre halves ragged

Late in yesterdays game Dykes put in a couple of aerial challenges for 2 up and unders just outside our box , it summed him up in that he failed to judge the flight of the ball twice in quick succession.
We’ve had some shite CFs but Dykes takes the award of worst ever for me.

T.Roberts showed at least some intent and promise yesterday. Must do better, because we need him obviously. His body language is still too negative imo.

Toothless up front and toothless in creating chances. Just getting a new donkey won't solve our problem.
One shot on target tonight.
think whilst Dykes is big part of problem it goes beyond him. When we were scoring goals we had bodies in the box which creates opportunities and secondary chances from blocks etc. when Albert scored his goal few weeks back Think we had 4 in the box which is unheard of for us. Watching us last few games if ball goes in it’s usually Dykes alone, at a push two in there which reduces the percentages. We create very little without Johansen. He hasn’t played really well for ages but he’s still the only one to pick a pass and start something.

We’ve had some shite CFs but Dykes takes the award of worst ever for me. When Roberts came on the first time he was in the box he got in front of a defender by coming on to a pass. Dykes never does this. If he did he might start making his own luck.

There are some positives from yesterday. We look pretty solid and organised in terms of how we're set up. I don't see this team conceding many under Critchley.
We do however need a far more dynamic centre forward than Dykes, otherwise snorefests like yesterday will probably be commonplace. We also need a better central midfielder, someone that can pick a pass. When Johansen doesn't play and Dozzell comes in, we look so devoid of creativity from the middle of the park.
Hopefully we have some tricks up our sleeve in the transfer window. 2 or 3 decent additions and I genuinely think we are in with a shout of promotion.

Am not defending Dykes but think he is far from the only reason we are not scoring. Midfield didn't create a single decent chance yesterday and we all know its pointless playing Dykes on his own. If we don't have a player within 20 yards of him it really shouldn't surprise us we aren't scoring. Be genuinely interested to know if the midfield are told to sit deep. Even Amos when he came on sat in the centre circle, whereas the whole point of him as a player is to charge into the box looking for the knock down. When we were scoring a lot of our goals were great strikes from outside the box - but our xg has been very low all season so the slump in goals is not a blip, but reflects a bigger problem.

As a few have pointed out earlier in the thread, you've gotta wonder why we aren't making more of our set pieces. We've got enough players that are dangerous in the air. If we aren't looking likely to score in open play, a well delivered corner is how you win a game like yesterday's.

A striker should be the focal point of our attacking play though Stainrod, even a mediocre striker creates a chance for themselves with a piece of skill, outpacing a defender or good anticipation of where the ball will arrive.
Genuine question if you played for us would you ever pass the ball to Dykes because I wouldn’t as you are just giving away possession.

If we aren't looking likely to score in open play, a well delivered corner is how you win a game like yesterday's. Just like we did in the last game against Preston. So it at least shows we're capable of it. And that was a set piece goal that had been worked on in training. As I say, I'd be more worried if Critchley was unaware of the issues that need addressing, two games into his tenure. He's now also alluded to changes being made for the next game, not just in personnel but approach.

Genuine question if you played for us would you ever pass the ball to Dykes because I wouldn’t as you are just giving away possession. In answer to your question Sparks, no I probably wouldn't pass to him but just in very limited defence of Dykes, if our number 9 is completely isolated up front, what striker who we might realistically sign would score goals? Even when he does get a knock down (not often I admit) who is ever going to be on the end of it if Willock and Adomah are almost in another county? Even when we do have a corner - as others have said - we can't beat the first man. Critchley took credit for the Preston goal as something "worked on in training" - but it was literally a corner that for the first time since god knows when beat the first man and went into the six yard box. But how many times lately have we even got basic balls like that into the box? Am not sure Mbappe would have scored for us yesterday given the service. The limitations of Dykes have been gone over endlessly on here but just think he gets blamed for all our attacking shortcomings which hides other issues. The reason the goals dried up probably had much more to do with Ilias being at the WC, Willock getting injured then completely losing form, Stef being out, plus our tactics.

Our best football this season was played when the penny briefly dropped that we actually dont have any strikers, in either the old fashioned or the modern sense.
For a while Beale played a 4-3-3 false nine, enabled by the fact that the few quality players we have were (briefly) all injury free. That worked.
We're paper thin in genuine class, we need all the talent on the park without Dykes because, bless him, he fucks up our transitions every single time ie before the ball gets anywhere near him.

Stains I would say if he was capable of holding the ball up he would not be isolated as he would bring people into the game to play off.
When he’s in the box alone then can on occasions feel sorry for him but he offers zero contribution in build up play and that’s all him. As someone said can’t even judge when to jump for headers.

We’ve had some shite CFs but Dykes takes the award of worst ever for me. Been saying it until i'm blue in the face. He is not a footballer. he has been here for nearly 3 years and there has been absolutely no improvement whatsoever. he does not win headers, he does not attack the front or back posts when crosses are delivered, he has no anticipation and isd always standing on his heels, he cannot run channels or in behind the defense. He is god awful. I don't buy into all the love for armstrong but, he does give us something different. he runs the lines, gets in behind defenders and creates space for our midfielders to attack. its about time he gets a run of games.
