I think Smith was let down by the team last season. A lot of his goals didn't turn the games as we were often too far behind. He's good off the bench if you need one goal. Would like to know more about Warburtons plans.

Think we need look beyond him now or use him sensibly from bench As the article says: "Target man Smith has a year remaining on his contract but Warburton generally prefers more mobile strikers and the former Fulham player looks set to move on."

Complete conjecture with a bit of rehashed news from a clickbait site.I will believe it when it happens.

wouldn't be surprised or have any bad feelings for smith if he did leave. he's rather one dimensional but is still very effective and good at this level and could easily get into most lower half championship teams.
he no doubt wants to be playing regularly which i can't blame him for nor can i blame the club for not giving him regular game time.
i would rather he stayed because he is good off the bench but i reckon we could get 1.5m-2m for him

But i would prefer him to stay.

We gotta keep him, surely? At championship level, he's still a potent weapon in our armoury.

If we can afford his wages, I feel a player we have been after before is the answer should we happen to sell Matt Smith. His name is Bjørn Maars Johnsen and plays for AZ ALKMAAR. He is an American with a Norwegian passport. He is a great allround striker. Very good in the air:

I don't see how in any sane world we can afford to get rid of him - unless someone else comes in.
It's not like we're overloaded with proven goalscorers.

We should have let him go before and kept Sylla. Miles better goals per game average, even in a poor team.

Miles better goals per game average, even in a poor team. Time for your daily dose of reality. It's hard to imagine getting a statement more wrong. Idrissa Sylla: career = one goal every 357 minutes. Matt Smith: career = one goal every 191 minutes. Most statisticians would say Sylla didn't get enough games to establish a proper average with us, thus also destroying your ludicrous claim, but of course they are included in his gpm above. In addition Smith has tended to play at a higher level, played far more games and often without the set up or service that benefits him. He also puts in a shift, something that Sylla is not necessarily noted for. Furthermore, he provides a useful tactical alternative for us.

While I will back Warburton and hope for the best, it's not hard to envision a situation where he gets sacked in dec/jan and we go back to basics and are relying on Matt Smith to save us.
Smith all day over Sylla.

Can’t think of many recent successful sides mid table or challenging top half who play system or rely on player like Smith
We won’t progress with him up top. The days of 6ft4 strikers running games died in 90s with long ball game. It’s only my because former manager loved direct football that Smith has lasted so long with us.
Fulham shipped him out and went to a mobile striker and went up
Decent off the bench last 15mins, other then that he’s deadweight to the team

or rely on player like Smith No one said anything about relying him. The point is that ditching him under current circs is massively questionable. Fulham never serviced him properly. As for them going up with their mobile striker, that really worked out for them......

Matt Smith is shit and his goals last season counted for nothing, end of. How is this even a conversation? Millwall were rumoured to want him, tells you all you need to know.

If he isn`t in Warburton`s plans sure someone else must come in?? Millwall rumoured to be linked now. I noticed than. And I`m not sure we should keep him. Problem is; How long will his legs last. Besides, we will not play with traditional wingers anymore. They will cut inside.

We'd be daft to sell Smith in my opinion. Take his goals out of the equation and we'd have been relegated last season and the previous season.
With 1 year left on his contract and only bottom half Championship sides showing an interest, I doubt he'd fetch more than a half million quid anyway!

It could be that you are right, but the manager still wants to sell him.

On that basis so are the rest of our front players. None of them have better goal scoring stats. Which kind of means it would be stupid to ket him go without a replacement. The people who have also been shit are the master tacticians who stuck him on the park without any width for long periods. I don't think he's the world's greatest striker, I just think that as an attacking force we're very very limited and we'll be more so when he goes.

To be fair, he hardly had any full games last season.
Personally think he is a decent striker but I think we should really be looking at someone who is more of a threat in areas as well as just the air.
