22 assists no way am i believing that Well, transfer market stats are industry standard. When you think of the chaos he could cause it seems entirely believable. Doesn't matter if they were intended or not. The bottom line with all this is that he was very useful to us, we didn't really utilise him, and now he's gone because he 'doesn't fit in'. Then again, we're Barcelona these days. Someone better tell MW they don't do 4-2-3-1.

He has gone because he wanted to be the starting striker and the club weren't having it. Not dissimilar to the legend of Alejandro Faurlin being got rid of.

Even unintentional assists I genuinely can’t recall 22 of them

He has gone because he wanted to be the starting striker and the club weren't having it. Not dissimilar to the legend of Alejandro Faurlin being got rid of. Which at his age, is entirely reasonable. Who wouldn’t want to be playing as many games as possible and as the main striker? Whatever one may think of his abilities or strengths, I have to say that he has been a superb servant of the club. Speaks intelligently, never said anything stupid or in the slightest bit disrespectful. The fact that Warburton came out and explained it as opposed to us having to endure silly stories on clickbait sites, says everything in my view.

Limited but always gave his all and seemed to be a well liked member of the squad. Millwall have got themself a good pro who will do a job for them and will be suited to their style of play.

100% Warburton's ambition has always outweighed his ability, and this wretched piece of business encapsulats that. We have no one remotely approaching Smith's mpg and anyone with that kind of stat will cost more than we can afford. You can use a big man and play football as long as you have width up top. Yes, but... It's been clearly stated by Warbs that Smith wanted to be the lead striker. He wasn't happy with his substitute role and he wanted to move on to where he had that opportunity. And Millwall wanted him. So what do you do in that situation? You don't want disgruntled players in your squad, and one thing I get a sense of already is that Warbs is building a squad of team players. He wants integration. For years we've had mix and match squads and consequently a disjointed team that like a stopped clock would be right on occasion. If Warbs wants to build an integrated squad and Matt Smith isn't part of those plans, so be it.

Can players get back to their best following ACL injuries? Van Nistelrooy and Shearer are two examples who did, that come to mind.

Knee trouble is a right bastard. Jay R for 10m? Massive punt at our level but EPL rights money has skewed all prem transactions.

Rodriguez was a great player before his cruciate injury! To be fair, he did well last season. Never thought he'd score that many. He's no Matt Smith though... The form book doesn't lie..... I always rated Andy Carrol back in the day ie before endless lay offs, injuries, bench. I think he was a top class striker who wasn't used properly, it happens all the time. Article on demise of big 9s: www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/andy-carroll-west-ham-united-contract-jonathan-liew-column-a8938471.html. The problem is we all associate a big man up top with hoofball. That's to do with poor management, people not having the vision to see how you can keep the ball on the ground until the last pass and still service your big lump. Incidentally I think Carrol was far more threatening and far more of a handfull than Crouchie ever was. Love a big 9s thread.

Carroll has cost his clubs over £700,000 for every goal he's scored....... IMO a hugely overated player. Read more: rfantasyisland.boards.net/thread/429/goodbye-big-smith?page=3#ixzz5tGcrhs00

A bit off topic, but Peter Crouch is on the market again, he is quite mobile, but can he run more than Matt Smith can? I doubt it. Hence, I have now resigned to the fact that we will never see him in Hoops again..

The argument re Carroll isn't whether he was value. To put it another way, if he'd been on frees and 500 a week throughout his career, that wouldn't make him better or worse as a player. The argument is that he was another really useful weapon poorly used, which is why he didn't score more.

Do you think? I'd say the only thing he'll be remembered for was his superb heading ability rather like a poor mans Mark Hately.... I think he didn't score more because he couldn't stay fit. He was actually injured when he signed for Liverpool and when he signed for West ham.
I always remember watching Crouchie at our place and being amazed how good his feet were.
On the subject of big 9's.........Shearer has got to be top of my list.

Carroll could've had a great career if it wasn't for the injuries and questionable lifestyle choices.

Matt Smith on his QPR exitSeptember 19, 2019 John Kelly MATT Smith knew that he wasn’t wanted at QPR soon after Mark Warburton took over in the summer – and said he felt “valued” when Millwall made their approach. Smith moved to The Den from west London as Lions boss Neil Harris rebuilt his attack following the departures of Lee Gregory and Steve Morison. That was five years after Millwall’s first approach for the target man, when he was at Leeds United. Harris had also tried to sign him in previous windows. Smith will face his former employers for the first time when the Hoops travel to south London this Saturday. The former Fulham centre-forward knew Millwall were the perfect fit this summer. “The fact that I was so wanted was a big thing,” Smith said. “As a striker to feel valued you get that extra spring in your step when you’ve got that belief and confidence behind you. That was the biggest pull factor. “Obviously playing in a team that suits my style of play is paramount. I think in modern-day football a lot of managers are going away from the two-up-front mentality. The more direct play is lost on some, my style of play can be a little bit of love/hate. So to come into an environment where they want to get the best out of me, they want to play to my strengths, was a big attraction. “When I was at Leeds I was versed to the fact that they were putting in bids under Ian Holloway. At the time I was very settled at Leeds, I had no intention of leaving. “But then it was a really crazy last two weeks of the transfer window. I ended up going to Fulham in the final hour of the transfer deadline. That was something I hadn’t envisaged happening at all, by which time the Millwall interest had passed. “There had been interest before but QPR didn’t want to get rid of me, they’d always seen me as an integral part of the squad. “When push came to shove it was time for me to move on. I came into pre-season under the new manager at QPR and it was very, very evident to me that I was surplus to requirements. It was based on about seven conversations within the first week. They wanted to bring a different type of player in and my time was over. “At that point it was a case of seeing what interest was there. The [Millwall] interest I was very aware of from day one. It was a case of getting that sorted, really. I’m not the type to sit down and collect the money without contributing or impacting. It was always in the forefront of my mind that I wanted to be in an environment where I could, and that was here.” Full article: www.newsatden.co.uk/73209-millwalls-matt-smith-on-his-qpr-exit-and-lunches-with-steve-morison-at-leeds-united

Dunno what I was worried about. Completely absent, never troubled us, not once. In fact a couple of Millwall mates asked me if we could take him back. They aren't impressed with him at all. Maybe we offloaded at the right time?

Looks a complete crock. Limping & struggling to walk from the first whistle. How / why he stayed on for 90 mins showed Millwall’s desperation.
