No, not what you think. It was always the case that the ref was part of the field of play and on the odd occasion the ball hit him it was just tough, play on. What was wrong with that exactly? Better than the daft idea we now have.

i think if the ref has vastly affected the outcome of a pass then the team originally in possession should be awarded a freekick that can only be passed backwards or sideways

I can't think of one instance in all the years I've been watching where a ref 'scored' or even 'assisted' so how about just get on with it chaps?

If the ref sidesteps all the way over to the corner flag spending half the match to check if the ball is in the right spot, then I think: Yes, you really should hit him.
