I worked around the corner from the Goat for about six years and I think I went in there once! I drove along past the cricket green for the first time for a while recently and was sad to see about three of the pubs that were there had closed. One of my mates (and a QPR lad who still follows us from Sweden) was a Mitcham boy. He knew a load of lads back in the 80s but they were mostly Chelsea. I worked just off Mitcham Common for years and we used to spend all Friday afternoon in the Jolly Gardeners (or Red House as it was known). Before popping back to work for an hour then heading home. How things have changed!

How things have changed! We were in the Goat regular ,of a friday afternoon/evening , when i was decorating , landlord down the Goat would cash your cheque ... as you can imagine there was loads of builders from St Helier,Mitcham ,Hackbridge , (white van man central) that got their cheques cashed ( back in the sc60s days ) ! i`d have a few ,then go home to get changed to go out later ., obviously there was loads of thing going round , and in the early90s the thing in South London was very good ! As you say most Mitcham boys are Chelsea ,but thats the same for everywherein SW London from Battersea to Belmont ! Ive never been in the Jolly Gardners ,that was Croydon as far as we were concerned ( even though it fell into London Boro Sutton , for some crazy boundary reason ! ),Did use to hit the 24 hr bakers at silly o clock in the morning ,at the end of Shamrock rd ( on the way down to Lombard ) ,loads after dos and parties !! Got tales to tell ,of Three Kings ,and the Ravensbury ! Two other pubs on Mitcham Common that we frequented .But the Angel was my main haunt .

My main pub growing up was the Hambrough Tavern in Southall before it got burnt down in the race riots. Live music Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon and night all within walking distance of home. What more could you want from a pub?
