Thought yesterday’s effort was worthy of its own thread.
I know some say we never looked like scoring but equally never looked like conceding. Probably as solid a defensive display as we have seen this season
Think we played perfect defensive plan, got bodies behind the ball, cleared lines when required and never over played. Kelly might not be perfect but he is clearly better then Lumley on current form and defence look more confident playing in front of him.
Rangel is safe reliable RB, Manning got caught couple of times but in the main that was far better defensive display from him.
Interesting that Barbet got plaudits yesterday but before his injury people were calling for him to be dropped. He does have a clanger in him but we are certainly a better side with him in it
Was not massively impressed with Ball or Cameron so still room for improvement which bodes all the better that we kept clean sheet.
Think that is 4/5 clean sheet of the season but it should be more
Take our chances and play as we did defensively and we will churn out some one or two nil wins

I thought Ball and Cameron were very good and Ball looked more positive.
Barbet got slated because of clangers. He didn't drop one yesterday so that's a bit of a odd comment.

Masterson is clearly an excellent prospect. He's been superb on the whole so could consider himself unfortunate to lose his place last night. With a fit Hall, Barbet, Masterson, Rangel and Kelly, we're looking a lot better defensively. BFG's departure can arguably be vindicated in that regard.

We were really good defensively last night, I just hope Rangel will manage to play two matches in a week. Kane, his stand in, is a player I hope we will sell asap, or play in another position for that matter... Barbet, Manning and Kelly did their part of the job. Barbet`s range of passes really impresses me. Regarding Masterson or Hall. Masterson for me. Hall needs a rest now.

If he costs us a goal a game then he isn't but if he carries on like last night he is. Having said that, even with the pens he was giving away our form dropped off when he was out.

LOL I thought Cameron had a very good game last night, others on different forums had his as MOTM, he was winning his tackles, retaining possession when under pressure from the Swans and played a few decent, albeit not too adventurous, passes. Not a MOTM display for me, but then there are those that thought Eze was no good last night so what do I know?

Having said that, even with the pens he was giving away our form dropped off when he was out. It is more than feasible that the pens he gave away, and not ALL of them should have been given if you look back at them, were because he was the one doing the best job of defending and getting to the man with the ball rather than leaving them in acres of space. Just a thought. I do think he is slow(comparatively) but I like the rest of his game.

Just don’t feel Cameron does enough, my description is he’s playing within himself.
For me yesterday he gave away a few unnecessary free kicks and as much as he won it he also gave it away

Can't work out why they didn't really attack our full-backs.

Had a good bite in the middle of teh park and him and Ball are good enough to pass it around as well. At home having both starting might be a bit too slow and predictable though.

I think the frustration at the start of the season was that we all thought it was only him making those mistakes and without them, we would be in the play offs. He gets injured and we realise that all the team are capable of gifting goals!

I was of the opinion that he was a dud early season based on how slow he was and how flaky he seemed. That was based on Joe Garner bullying him at our place. Hope to be proved wrong though but will reserve further comment until he has a run of games.

Ironically and rarely, our weakness today was actually in attack and not defence. Dykes absence being a factor too. You wonder if the penny has finally dropped for MW about how to properly drill a back five. There was certainly evidence of that on today's showing.
Or perhaps this combined with an improvement in personnel there, in every position. Dieng for Lumley; Kakay for Kane; Wallace for Manning; and Dickie for Hall. Most of the players in the current squad are now MW's signings, a squad gradually being moulded in his image. It perhaps also explains the type of transfer business just concluded.

We looked as solid at the back today in recent memory. Could be a decent season.

Much better today but if you were facing us you'd still come down our left. We don't double up right, if at all, and Wallace drifts in to the middle when there's an attack on the other wing leaving space for the overlap. He's not as out of position as Manning as at least he's in the same half but, like our set pieces, it seems that whoever is involved the problem remains.

Agree with your points..maybe a left sided M/F player or another left sided C/B may solve the problem. Faysal Bettache could fill the left sided M/F role if Amos is doubtful for PNE

Banfield and Eustace are much more involved now according to the manager himself.

Wallace looked fit and was overlapping in the 2nd half and Dickie is starting to become a presence at the back and think him and Dieng have been good for each other. Kakay is coming on and Barbet has done ok since Coventry.

i think we have a better defence than last season already. early days i know but we look a lot more organized and composed in defence than last season. kakay especially looks like he could be our best RB in years if he keeps it up, he hasn't had a bad game yet (touch wood) since breaking into the side. dickie is an absolute unit at the back and has stepped up seamlessly from league 1. he's the kind of defender we've been crying out for. dieng hasn't really had the opportunity to show what he's capable of but he looks a hell of a lot more confident than kelly and lumley
