I used to go with my two brothers and a mate in those days and for that game above we stood away from the main block of fans as we had seen a few 'wall lads coming in with the Rangers fans in the away end and didn't fancy a trip to the hospital before work on Monday Same deal for a midweek game, may have been a cup replay back at the Old Den too.

Big escort out. If u didn't go looking u was fine. ^this^ We only played there 3 times after 1972 until 1990 and I went to all 3: 1987, 1988 and 1990. There was no trouble or threat of trouble at any. Keep your head down and don't act like a prick and you'll be alright, same as any ground in the country. Admittedly what may have helped us was that at that in the 80s Millwall didn't hate us as they seemingly do now, they went top of the league after beating us 3-2 in 1988, they were already effectively relegated when we beat them in 1990 and in 1987 they had just drawn West ham away in the Simod Cup which was the first time they had played each other in 10 years - and a game to which they took 6,000 to - which meant they were saving themselves for that. Not disputing what esoxlucius thinks he saw by the way, but I doubt Millwall would have been bothered to come in our end at any of those 3 fixtures and suspect what he saw was Rangers fans he didn't know not wearing anything that might identify them as such as most of us did when travelling to The Den.

It was the time of OshKosh dungarees and pastel coloured Tee shirts as a "uniform". At the time I knew a very high proportion of the fans who regularly went to away games, even if just by sight, and these three just didn't "look" quite right. There was no trouble so I may have been wrong but as I said, I didn't fancy a trip to the hospital before work on Monday.

I went to the game we lost 3-2 in 1988. Trevor Francis was our player manager. I went on my own even though a few of my mates were going. I decided to go to New Cross Gate station. Bad move as it was miles from the ground, so I had to wander round trying to spot the floodlights as a landmark. Eventually I went in the right direction of the ground, I had no idea where the away end was so instead of walking in among the home fans;
I had to ask someone where the away end was, I was expecting a smack in the mouth at least. To my surprise the local was a friendly chap and directed me to the away end. The old den was a nasty looking gaff to say the least. We were all in a caged corner section of terrace. I saw my mates and stood with them. We were thrashed in the first half and I was going to piss off early as I thought we were going to lose about 6-1. Second half was much better, Trevor Francis steered us to almost make a comeback. We lost 3-2.
Even though we lost we were kept in for a good 45 minutes while they cleared the streets. Got back home ok. And in hindsight I wished I just gone with my mates in the first place.

I always found that the only ones who weren't expecting to be involved who got a slap were the ones mouthing off and acting all Billy Big Bollocks. If you didn't act like a hard man and/or a prick you'd be left alone.

Took my future wife Millwall about 1971 i think,we won 2-1 rodders scored a cracker,hit underside of bar then the post and went in. Remember loads of old geysers in donkey jackets and going past a lot of old corrugated iron used as fences for boundary of ground. I have the programme in my collection. I knew how to treat a woman in the days😂
