It doesn't make any sense at all for so many reasons. Good attacking sides are going to get that ball in sooner or later, contesting or no contesting. With decent movement off the ball you can take three contesting defenders out of the game in a split second. For instance MW's philosophy doesn't take account of late arriving mf. You're also horribly vulnerable to pace or anyone with the ability to go past their man.
The simple thing to do would be to man mark your set pieces, zonal for open play, its isn't rocket science and would suit his approach.
We have to improve off the ball. That's the bottom line. I think that's what Arteta has been trying to sort out at Arsenal, he might actually be getting there. Be nice if the penny dropped with Warbs.
