There has been a lot of talk on here of late about what the squad needs and how many players we need to bring in. I thought it would be interesting to start a thread about players currently at the club, but previously outside of the regular match day squad. See what peoples opinions are and who we think might make it etc.
I think Kakay and Masterston are bound to build on encouraging performances last season and become regulars. I think there is also a chance that Dieng could profit from the fact neither of our other 2 keepers have really cemented their place as number 1 keeper.
I'd say this season is probably make or break for Oteh, Shodipo & Smyth, probably Hamalainen too. They've all been around the first team for a few seasons without really breaking into the starting line up regularly. I suspect Oteh won't make the cut, but the rest I think might have enough about them to stake a claim for a regular spot. Smyth I like, he's just really lightweight. Hopefully a loan at Wycombe and some time over the summer to get in the gym have toughened him up.
Then we've got Ramkilde. He's looked pretty average in the few cameos he's had but he's coming off a very long lay off. From the research I've done, he was very highly rated as a youth before he got injured. Here's hoping he kicks on this season.
Beyond that we have a handful of youngsters on the fringes. The boss has been in the press saying how much he likes Bettache, and I know Ody Alfa impressed during our first pre-season game. Off the top of my head we also have Dalling, Owens & Gubbins that have been close to the 1st team in the last season. Anyone on here seen much of these guys? Do we expect them to make the 1st team squad?

Good thread.
Gubbins played most of the 2nd half against Wimbledon. He replaced Barbet at CB and did well I thought. Slotted in seamlessly with Ball alongside him.
Ramkilde disappointed me that game. Wasted a couple of decent chances and didn't do much else. Hope it was just an off day but he has to improve.
Alfa, as you say, looked very good I thought.
Masterson too had another excellent game.

Seems to be a little bit of a buzz about that Faisal Bettache.

the empty shirt (oteh) has already broke. even warburton didnt bother with him for our game against wimbledon.
need to replace eze or sign a backup for chair.
we only have tom kane at rightback.
at left back, we have manning who is running down his contract while wallace is finding it comfy on the physio table.
lets not talk about our keepers.
so what is needed are......
right back, center back, (dickie) left back, number 10, striker.

You're a right misery Hits! 😂
Kakay deserves a run at right back after the way he ended last season. Beyond that Kane or Cameron can play there. Left back (as things stand) Manning, Wallace, Hamalainen and Barbet can play there.
I reckon first team central defender and a utility defender and we are sorted at the back.
What I think we need beyond that is a combatative central midfielder, another number 10 and an additional striker.

I saw Hamalainen play for Finland against Ireland yesterday and he played quite OK. Nothing spectacular, but his positional awareness and allround defensive work were solid, imo.

This is no different to whenever he's played for us. He and Wallace have never really let us down at LB, and Wallace is fully fit now. And yet they are still both 2nd and 3rd choice LB (behind someone who continually lets us down), their position by trade I hasten to add. Go figure! 🤯

i'm a big fan of manning but after plymouth's game i don't think he should be playing LB anymore. he's good contributing to attacks but his defensive consistency and awareness is lacking a great deal.
he needs to be moved further up the pitch either as part of a midfield 3 with ball and amos or as a left winger

Finland didn't have much to defend first half so didn't get a proper view how he defends, but was lively passing and going forward. Pretty much like Manning

Pretty much like Manning Niko looked pretty solid for Kilmarnock last year. I think he was named in the Scottish Prem team of the week on a few occasions. Really hard to know whether that is good enough for Championship football though. Some of the teams in that league really are Pony. But you only have to look at the likes of Kieran Tierney or Virgil Van Dyk to know that not all defenders who do well in Scotland are necessarily out of their league south of the border. Personally I definitely think he's earned a season to prove himself in our first team. Ditto Kakay and Dieng. You really can't ask for any more from young players. They've worked hard to make impression, they gone out on loan and continued to graft and improve. Apart from anything else, the rest of our youngsters need to see that type of effort rewarded with a run of games.

What position did he play for Kilmarnock? Finland played 3-5-2 and Nico was a wing back. Did pretty well in that role, especially going forward. Cannot say if he's a good left back though. Hope we'll see him more often this season.

Cannot say if he's a good left back though. He impressed in pre-season, Timmy. Thought he did well in his cameos last season too. We're not privvy to training sessions, but fans can only judge players on what they do on the pitch, which is where it counts. Same can be said of Smyth who has always impressed in competitive games, as well as friendlies.

with all these signings, where does it leave our fringe players?
surely, the likes of smyth, masterson, gubbings, shodipo, bettech and kelly will either be loaned out or sold in the coming week.
then there are the likes of bos, manning and lumely who are out of contract in the summer.
still plenty of movement in the transfer market to come, mainly outs though.

There’s an interesting post on another forum about all Championship Clubs in the next 10 days being requested to submit a 25 man squad list in for the current season.
Under 21 do not count so if we sign somebody over 21 on a permanent or loan then some need to go from the current squad...of which 8 must be a home grown player.
This figure of 25 will be then reduced for season 21/22 to a 20 player squad.
Our current squad totals 28.

plenty are into the last year of their contracts sparks.
from the top of my head........
lumley, manning, cameron, wallace, bos along with a host of under 23s.
we will have no problem getting down to a 20 man squad.

For this season at least 3 need to either be sold or loaned before the 1or 2 other transfer targets MW has said may can come in ?
The 4 names mentioned by Stanley look the most likely to leave ?..... Lumley,Manning,Shodipo and Oteh.
Realistically I think BOS will be sold with Ramkilde and Smyth loaned out ?
Personally I don’t understand why these new rules are still being implemented in the current climate with such a hectic playing schedule ?
Next season with only 20 would make Shteeve lose his hair island ?

I think at least 23 should be allowed. 3 keepers and 2 for each outfield position. That's minimum IMO.
