Am I right in thinking that both Bonne's goals were headers? Both crosses came from defenders who had ventured forward. Our main issue is our wide men over play or in Chair's case cut back on-to his favoured foot. Until we get a way of playing that plays to the strikers strength we will always struggle for goals and that is where the manager comes into play. Unfortunately both crosses came from our centre backs. Maybe we don't have full backs to play to the strikers strenght? Neither do we have wings to do that, except maybe Adomah.

If what say is correct I doubt we will ever see Dykes hit the heights he could be capable of and why did we not purchase strikers who were not reliant on width?

As strikers who would be desperate to do well for us, with goals being their currency, you would have thought Dykes and Bonne would be telling the coaches how best to play to their strengths. Indeed vice versa you'd have thought the coaches would also be aware of their strengths, playing to them to get the best from them. Whichever direction the communication would be coming you'd have thought there'd at least be some on this. Bizarrely and frustratingly there's been no evidence of it in actual games though.

I did see Dykes win a header against Milwall admittedly closer to the halfway line than their box but it's an improvement.

Whichever direction the communication would be coming you'd have thought there'd at least be some on this. Bizarrely and frustratingly there's been no evidence of it in actual games though. First of all I’d like to say that no one knows everything about football. So maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong. Now with regards to Dykes, I assume his attitude is one where he’s there to listen, learn and work hard. That’s what’s worked for him up until now and remember although he’s just turned 25, because of his background, being late into the game, in “football years” if you like, he’s a lot younger. And at times it shows. Now I sound like his biggest fan, it’s not that, but I’d like him to succeed for a number of reasons, his unorthodox pathway into professional football, Scotland need him confident and on form, he has probably saved my local football team from financial disaster. I’ve never met him but he seems like a genuine, down to earth, decent guy. Ok all of that aside, talking about Dykes as a player. He has got a lot going for him physically, he’s tall, strong, athletic, good pace, hard working. Now his inexperience at high level football shows sometimes in his finishing, but you’d hope and think that will improve over time and with practice. Although in the Championship with the amount of games played, perhaps he’s not getting a lot of time for coaching. Now I could probably write page after page about Dykes and his situation. But I’ll try to get to the core of what I think maybe the major problem he is encountering since his move to QPR. It maybe his technique isn’t quite up to speed/scratch yet at that level. And to drill down and be more precise, his 1st touch. So much in football is derived from that 1st touch. Now maybe because he has stepped up and you get less time, the defenders on average are bigger, stronger, faster. I’m not saying he has a bad 1st touch, he doesn’t, and it can we very good at times, but speaking generally. As I said he’s not been playing football all his life, he’s not been getting top quality coaching since his early teens. He’s fought to get where he is by getting the best from his abilities/physicality. But perhaps he’s at a level now where he needs to concentrate and improve certain technical areas of his game. Can this be done? Yes, I know that I could improve his 1st touch and his technique, I could improve a number of aspects of his overall game. I’d make him more 2 footed. Can the coaches at QPR do it? I have my doubts. Dykes carried Livingston last season, he was our only real CF and last season he was the best CF outside the Old Firm. QPR are now asking him to do the same, and he’s struggling a bit. Ideally he’d have an experienced CF in the squad to help him, ideally more time on the training pitch to be coached. But he is a fighter and he has lifted his game each time he’s been challenged. As I say some parts of his technique/ game need polished/ fine tuned. I know I could do it with him. Not sure the QPR coaches can. And by the way, I’d have his game improving, 1st touch etc, very quickly. You would see the improvements each game if he was willing to work, put in the effort and apply himself. Which I think he would, I think he has that desire to learn and progress.

I wonder how much this is down to BOS being fed up playing for us? On the training ground, It can`t be easy for anyone to have to deal with a player who is clearly going through the motions these few months.

Why not try playing 4, 3, 3 with Ball Cameron and LTC in midfield and Dykes, BOS and Willock/Adomah up top. The way we play the midfield create sod all anyway so why not get the ball forward early and get the front three playing in the final third. Dykes with runners off him nearby may actually work as the system up to this point clearly has not.

Here is what I feel is a good post from LFW:
"I think it is difficult for Dykes with BOS as he holds onto the ball too long and when he does manage to get a ball into the middle into a packed goalmouth, no one knows what he is going to do and he doesn't find a teammate. The one against Brentford he released early, as Rico Henry is as quick as him, and whilst stretching and Dykes had time to read it and connect. A rare exception. Chair has a similar tendency to hold the ball for too long, an extra touch, but to a lesser extent.
Also Dykes is finding as Matt Smith used to, that when he comes short for a header and flicks it on, there is rarely a team mate who has made a positive move to get beyond him".

Good points and an interesting one about BOS getting his cross in early for once. Over to the manager... again.

Surely if Dykes comes short and realises/knows there is no one to flick it on for that you would not flick it on (or does he need be taught this?) if no one is running off you then take the ball down and bring others into the game. Hughill managed to do that last year and many others have managed it in recent history such as helguson, Bobby and furlong.
Plant your feet bring the ball down on your chest and play from there
Players need to think on their feet, read the game and the situation. If we have a striker flicking it on to no one I would suggest we got bit of a numpty

If we have a striker flicking it on to no one I would suggest we got bit of a numpty It depends on the height, weight of the ball played up to him, if it’s played at pace and height, all he can do is flick it on. Look at Chairs goal against Watford. Dykes came short, Willock plays a nice ball to his feet which he flicked through to Chair, who is 1-1 with the keeper, goal. Dykes is good around the 18 yard box at holding it up, drawing in defenders and then laying it off to a runner. But you’ve got to pass the ball to him and make the runs off him.

Hence why I said read game and situation No you said he was a numpty for flicking it onto to no one, I’m saying in many cases that’s all he can do. And it’s the fault of the other attackers if their not making the runs.

If a high ball is played up to Dykes and he’s having to jump up and challenge to win a flick on, it’s not his fault if no one else has anticipated him winning it. And with those types of balls, there’s nothing else Dykes or anyone else can do with it. That’s the kind of “flick on” I’m talking about.

How can we expect players to anticipate flick downs from our own strikers when on mass they cant read the game in our own half when not got the ball.

Hand on heart what is he contributing other then pens? Do think he will Nick one second half having said that

If the Jordan Rhodes piece is true than our Manager and DOF need to get their head out their arse and look at our goals against column. Sparx, our goals for column is just as grim mate: We have now scored 3 goals in the last 630 minutes of football! And one of those was an own-goal!

Imo we need to get out of relegation trouble this season by purchasing or loaning a Combative M/F leader Creative player M/F L/B MW or DOF could not realistically justify to the owners that we need more strikers after buying 3 in pre season. If we are planning to outscore teams like last season surely it’s easier to tighten the defence up first.
