The team / squad now seem to have found a formation/system that suits many of them, which they seem happy and comfortable in. I think it would be a sensible to stick with this formation for a couple of seasons, tweak it, improve personnel in certain positions, reconfigure the squad to suit the formation and see where it takes QPR, Now obviously the team are a 3-4-1-2 at the moment, which is a slight modification on a 3-5-2, and you can go 3-5-1-1 or 3-4-2-1, it’s a flexible system and there is flexibility within the system with regard to types of midfielders, centre forwards employed. The constant throughout is the back 3 and the two wingbacks. This is the foundation, the bedrock which the rest of the team is built upon. Now the backline has been performing well of late, they are conceding few goals and the opposition is having to work hard to get anything from the team. So I think it’s best to stick with this and build upon it for the next couple of seasons. So here are a few thoughts
Move Dickie in the middle of the 3 and make him captain, Cameron who is doing a good job is 35 years old ( still perhaps worth offering him a 1 year deal as cover), this would mean that there is less opportunities for Dickies lack of pace, mobility being exposed and he is well equipped to being the rock which the back 3 is built around. So that would mean signing a new right sided centre half in the summer, I’d look for a pacy, tall, strong experienced right-sided centre half (perhaps 27,28 years old) So including the keep, the backline would look like:
Dieng New RCB. Dickie(capt). Barbet
Cover: Cameron, Jordy (?) or another LCB, Masterton
Wingbacks (right), if Kane keeps performing then he’s worth a place in the squad, I think. So do you stick with Kakay and Kane and look for Kakay to start out competing and ousting Kane, possibly. Wingbacks (left), Wallace has been decent of late, I’d be tempted to loan out Niko again, bring in a pacy, strong, experienced wingback (again 27,28 years old), offer Wallace a 1 year deal as cover. Wallace is 33 now, so offering him a 1 years deal and loaning out Niko gives Niko a season to get more playing time before he comes back to the squad to compete for the LWB slot. So the whole defence would look like: Dieng Kane/ New RCB Dickie Barbet New LWB Kakay (Masterton) (Cameron) (Wallace) Jordy(New LCB) As far as the Goalkeeper, Dieng has cemented his place as 1st choice, so will Lumley be happy to play 2nd fiddle or will he want to leave and play 1st team football regularly? If so a back up keeper maybe needed.

Midfield: Midfield is a bit of a mess at the moment, with a number of players on loan (who becomes a permanent signing?), a couple of bad injuries, a couple of players who don’t really suit playing in a formation with wingbacks, a young inexperienced player, so I think if the decision is made to play 3/5 at the back as the teams main formation, then the midfield has to be modified to reflect this. There is quite a bit of flexibility within the basic 3-5-2, which allows you to play a variety of midfielders. You’re basic / traditional midfield 3 consists of Box- Box Defensive Mid Playmaker Something along those lines.
When Carroll was fit and playing it was a slight variation on this
Ball (def mid) Carroll (playmaker) Chair (attacking mid centre) Which lines up as a 3-4-1-2 br]The squad has now added Fields and Johansen into the midfield. So yesterday against Blackburn it was Ball(def mid). Johansen (central mid) Chair (attacking mid) I’ve put Johansen as “central mid” because he doesn’t seem to be an outright playmaker like Carroll or an outright defensive midfielder like Ball, but it shows the flexibility within the midfield of the system. Against some teams you could put in Carroll, perhaps where you expect more space and time on the ball and want to play a more possession based game. And other times where it’s going to be more of a battle, less possession, the ball getting moved forward a lot quicker you could play Johansen ( or Fields or Amos when fit ?) Now looking at the midfielders in the squad, it’s hard to know how the 1st choice midfield will look, because we don’t know who is going to still be here next season. But I do think the midfield needs some readjusting regardless. Ball - I’d keep as a squad player, but I’d be looking at someone else a 1st choice def mid. And I’d be looking for a right-footer or someone 2 footed, most of the central midfielders in the squad are left-footed Chair - Just signed a long term deal, 1st choice attacking mid centre Willock - competing with Chair, could also play alongside if / when going to a 3-4-2-1 Carroll, I’d try to sign and play him in games where it’s not going to be a purely physical battle Fields ? no appearances yet, but has a good pedigree and is young, so can’t really say much. Johansen, would keep if possible, competing with Carroll for the slot alongside the defensive midfielder, and used in more physical games like yesterday’s match against Blackburn. Bettache, looks like he’s struggle physically in the middle of the park, I’d be looking at turning him into an attacking midfield centre, I would be looking at loaning him out possibly to get more game time. Thomas, again, not seen much of him, an attacking midfield centre, would keep him as competition / cover for Chair and Willock Amos, out the whole season injured, would compete with Johansen when fit Adomah - doesn’t really fit well within the system, he’s 33 years old, so I’d let him go at the end of the season.

Johansen was brought in more or less as a like-for-like replacement for Carroll (due to his 3 month lay off). Both playmakers that suit a possession based game but Carroll is perhaps a bit more deep-lying and less combative / and a tackler than Johansen. Carroll's strengths however are his vision, reading, ability to maintain possession in tight spaces under pressure and to pick out good short and long passes.

So there’s cover if Lumley goes, that’s one less signing needed if that happens , although teams usually carry 3 keepers in their squad, 2 main goalkeepers competing for the no 1 shirt and the reserve, u23 keeper in case of emergencies

Before Amos' injury Ball wasn't a regular starter. Carroll was eventually recruited to fill the void left by Amos, even though Amos is more of a box-to-box MF. Field we don't know much about yet but I'd say he's more competition for Johansen than for Ball. We'll have to see where Amos is with his rehab and if he'll be ready for the start of next season. Where we are definitely weak is def mid.

Forwards: Most important is to try and keep Charlie for another couple of seasons, I’m sure he’d still be dangerous at this level for another couple of years at least. Dykes and Bonne, have been disappointing for the most part, although hopefully they will improve in the run in to the end of the season. Kellman is very young and I’d be looking at loaning him out I’d look to bring in an experienced target man on loan to help Dykes and cover injuries, suspensions That would mean 4 centre forwards in the squad Charlie / Bonne Dykes / New CF I think that’s reasonable for a team that’s playing 2 up front for the most part.

Is it me, or is john eustace becoming more prominent in decision making. Watching the game yesterday, when the camera panned to the dugout a few times, John is seen pointing out instructions to warburton then he himself starts shouting at the players on the pitch.
I would not be suprised at all if it turns out that we changed to 352 on the recommendation of eustace.

The most important point is the coaching staff have shown to flexibility to change

So in conclusion I’d be looking at keeping the core of the squad together, bringing in a couple of new players, releasing a couple of players and loaning out a few of the youngsters.
In: New 1st choice Right Centre Halve New 1st choice Left Wing Back New 1st choice Defensive Midfielder (right or 2 footed) New Left Centre half (Jordy ?) cover, competition for Barbet On loan Centre Forward (target man) Offer 1 year deal to Cameron as cover Offer 1 year deal to Wallace as cover Try to sort out the midfield ie Amos, Carroll, Johansen, Fields, who are all left footed / sided. You’d be looking at Amos and another 2 Perhaps a new keeper as competition for Dieng if Lumley leaves

Christ, can we see this season out first. Then have a clearer eye on next. I’m giving this little summary because ithe squad is being taken in certain direction, following a certain trajectory you can’t just completely change it overnight. If the management are going to pursue playing 3/5/2 or a variation as the main formation of the squad they’ve got to go down that route for a couple of seasons to get the full benefits from it. Anyway is there something else you’d rather chat about, would you prefer to discuss yesterday’s rugby match?

I’d be tempted to loan out Niko again Hmmm not sure about that. He's 23 now, has been at the club for 7 years and has already had three different loan spells at various clubs. Sooner or later you have to make a decision on such players. He's also under contract for the next three years.

This is true, the situation with Wallace, if he accepts a 1 year deal and if QPR go and get a 1st choice left wing back, would allow 1 more loan deal and give Niko the maximum amount of time before that decision is reached. Kakay is in a similar position, he’s going to have to step up next season or the season after or QPR are going to have to find another right wing back

Out
Niko on loan (last loan spell, if Wallace accepts a 1 year deal and a new 1st choice left wing back is found) Bettache on loan Kelman on loan Adomah Sort out who stays and who goes between Carroll, Johansen and Fields, depending on the situation with Amos

So would assume the club has plans for what is needed and perhaps some of the business is already done in Field and De Wijs
For me before the Jan window we had an overall weak squad although we had some reasonable players in certain areas. The jan window turned a weak squad into a competitive one as we are seeing
We have nice blend now of experience and up and coming players but our upturn is partly due to the loans.
So what areas do you still think need addressing in the summer and any realistic targets for suggestion
On my shopping list would be one or two strikers and player in the mould of Johanson if we can’t retain him and someone creative to put pressure on Chair and maybe another decent quality defensive midfielder. If pushing the boat out wing back for each side of the park so a total of seven players
Any other views?

Agree in the main Wests.
We need a LWB, DM, No10 and a striker. That's where the squad is thinnest.
Last couple of seasons the club has become over reliant on the loan market presumably due to financial restrictions. But if possible we need to start turning some of these loans into perms otherwise they just return to their clubs and we continue treading water each season.

i'd be happy if we had a gameplan and improved our squad early in the summer rather than panicking in the last week/jan.
i'd like to keep stefan but if we can't then we need to bring someone in of that ilk. great link up play but he has a winning mentality. keeping charlie is an absolute must as well, he's revolutionised our side and brings genuine leadership and positivity to the side.
other than that, we for certain need a new LB. wallace has been great this season but he's still 34 and rather injury prone so shouldn't be our starting LB next season, regardless of whether he signs a new deal.
i'd like us to keep field too, jury is still out on de wijs but he's the kind of CB we need.

I tried to address some of this in a thread a few weeks ago and I agree with a lot of the points made here. One thing I would like to see is us playing to the strengths of the squad from day one and not try to play the way the manager would like until the penny drops that they're not good enough. If we continue with a DOF then the manager's job is to get the best out of what he's got. That said, if we can pair Field and Johansen that's light years ahead of Carroll and Cameron.

if we can pair Field and Johansen that's light years ahead of Carroll and Cameron. Light years ahead of Ball and Cameron rather. IMO. Carroll is a very different type of player and offers another option. That debate's been done to death though so wouldn't want to drag the thread off topic.

Firstly, If we can`t keep Johansen he has to be replaced by a new signing and we also have to buy two new strikers. Sadly we will not be able to keep Austin and Stefan both. Secondly, I like how the management have improved our squad.
