Westy asked me yesterday, where's the desire? For me a large portion of it is playing at Accrington, Stevenage and sitting on the bench at Walsall. This isn't hindsight, he's called me an old fashioned c*** often enough when I was moaning about how stupid it is to loan out so called promising youngsters from a small, weak squad. We destroyed any competition for places. Look at BOS yesterday, no inexperienced youngster but he came on and immediately made our only two forward runs. Otherwise all our changes are either like for like or long ball to Smith. If the youngsters aren't good enough next year will be too late to find out.

I don’t think you can say the youngsters will have more passion. The same players have played with real fight at times this season. It’s easy to point to passion when things are not going well. Fact is our squad isn’t very good. Probably bottom 5....we just need to hope we can sneak over the line.

They would be playing to keep the shirt instead of the couldn't give a shit attitude they seem to have now.

But the same players clearly gave a shit before. We need to look deeper than they just need to run around more.

Do you think yesterday spoilt their Sunday lunch? I doubt it. As for running around, if that's what it takes we are down - must be the least fit team I've seen in Hoops. My point is about complacency and the club (whoever...?) has fuelled that by removing competition.

They are just busting a gut to make a career for themselves. If you are one of our first teamers and you see these young lads day in day out, working their socks off to get noticed by the boss you are going to up your game as well. By removing these guys from the squad for the 2nd half of the season, we have removed that competition for a place in the starting 11 at the weekend. It's human nature, and so obvious to me that it's reason we've only won 1 game since the transfer window. I keep saying it, but it astounds me that our management team were naive enough not to consider that this might happen when we loaned out so many of our back up players!

The spirit and passion left us when Warnock was sacked first time around and never really been the same since.

Yes but loaning then out to get regular game time was not the worst idea in the world. It just hasn’t worked out. Smyth and Chair would be good to have in the squad now but not sure about the others

Hughes was the main reason and the clown in charge allowed it to happen.

Some kind of infighting in the squad is my guess.

Cannot slag off barton. Came back from his loan, rolled up his sleeves and helped drag us back up to the prem through the playoffs.

They tend to stop turning up when they have no respect left for the club / gaffer / organisation. Not an excuse, but we're an ongoing shambles top to bottom and they know it. They quit mentally at the first sight of blood, ie just when you need to show character.
Also - I've noticed that teams often criticised for not rolling up sleeves are often those without a recognised skipper. Arsenal fans get enraged by regular performances like the one at Goodison today and they rotate skipper duty which simply doesn't work. We don't have a single player who I'd describe as captain material.
