Call it greed if you like, but he's already agreed to take a 50% wage reduction and Barca are still in too much of a financial mess to be able to even sort that out. End of the day, PSG are prepared to continue to pay him a similar wage as what he's been earning in recent years. If I was him, I'd have done exactly the same (minus the cringey press conference). |

Why should Messi play for free because Barcelona have been shit with their finances?
Not being funny, pre-pandemic the club had over $1bn annual revenues. Why shouldn't their star player be paid a decent sized chunk of that? The fact the Directors there have been playing fast and loose with company money isn't a justification as to why he should work for free.

He offered to take a 60% cut in the end but they still can't afford it. Even with Messi gone, they are at 95% of their turnover on wages. They haven't been able to offload anyone as they are being paid so much.
Pique etc didn't accept a pay cut which would have allowed Messi to stay.
As others have said, it's silly to suggest that someone who is the best at what they do, do it for free, whilst the owners/club make millions from shirts with Messi on it. Make millions from tourists coming to see the trophies that Messi won them, coming to watch him play. All the other merch that they sell with Messi on it. How many players signed for Barcelona so that they can play along side Messi? I bet a fair few did.

I found out today, that he couldn't play for less than 50% cut due to Spanish law. Apparently losing Messi will cost Barca around £120m a year in lost sales.
