...when we don't have to keep selling our best players to survive.
Been fantasising* / imagining about the kind of a team we'd have had in recent times, had that been so:
Smithies Furlong Robinson Simpson Mbia Phillips Sterling Eze Austin (Mk 1) Taarabt Remy
etc...
*This is Rangers Fantasy Island after all.

A few weeks back I was kind of hoping that Dieng,Chair and Dickie wouldn`t have developed so fast at our club. It was in the footballing sense of word hard to take when Eze went a few seasons ago. Anyway: we obviously need money to make the club tick...

There was a time that I wished that we had the quality of player to sell to survive. There was a time when we were dogshit, and didn't have the players to attract to progress, and sell, or coming through the youth team. The fact we sold Eze for ยฃ20 million, and the likes of Chair, Willock, and Dickie have been mentioned as attracting interest for big (for us) money moves is certainly progress.

Still remember with horror selling 45 goals between them in a season Allen and Goddard, then playing Bob Hazell up front, and bringing in Tommy Langley.......

it'll be great and its coming, look at brentford as a prime example.
dieng, dickie and chair could easily go for 40m combined and with that we can sign higher calibre players whilst also sticking to our principles of developing younger talent. instead of scouring league 1 and 2 for cheap diamonds in the rough we'll be able to afford the top premier league bound talent there, just like brentford did with toney after selling watkins for 35m.
then the ball will firmly be in our court and we'll only sell when we get a ridiculous offer. in no world are watkins and benrahma worth a combined 60m but thats the fortunate position brentford found themselves in.
i hope we do get promoted this season just to get that cash injection from the prem and then we can spend 20-30m on young players to prepare for our inevitable relegation and sale of standout players.
there's certainly something great going on at our club and its great to see!

Mbia was headless chicken and was being paid a kings ransom. Remy was only here for the money. Taarabt should have actually been sold earlier in my opinion, rather than kept on for longer. And there a few others on your list who's careers took a turn for the worse after leaving us (i.e. we probably sold at the right time). Sterling we made 10 or 12 million quid from without him even kicking a ball for the first team, hard to suggest that one was bad business either in my opinion.
At the end of the day, football has always been a pretty transient industry and we will always be a club that some players will look at as something of a stepping stone. Some players we sell with end up being better business than others. It's just the nature of the beast.

Mbia was headless chicken Went on to win a couple of European competitions if memory serves! UEFA Cup with Sevilla, is that right? Not being funny mate but Paul Lambert and Jesper Blomqvist have both won the Champions League. Doesn't mean they were particularly good footballers. Mbia has been playing in China since his late 20's. Bang average, money grabber of a player. Much like all the shit that we were stupid enough to sign in the Premier League years. Agent's wet dream is what we were at the point. A place to send all the players that no other clubs would touch.

Some players we sell with end up being better business than others. It's just the nature of the beast. Kind of missed the spirit of my post tbf mate. It was more wistful than anything. The examples given weren't meant to be open to much analysis, at least not all of them. More about just looking forward to a time, hopefully in the not-too-distant future, when there will be less pressure on the board to sell our prized assets simply to survive. And as Corbs says, I think we are slowly getting there, which is encouraging Mbia could easily have been swapped for another

We don't need to particularly sell any of our prized assets at this moment in time mate. Doesn't mean that we won't if the right offers comes in though. It's just sound business at the end of the day, isn't it?
Personally I'd want us to sell if the right money is offered. It's the right way for a club of our size to be run.

Korean fans showing up with QPR shirts and scarfs just cos Ji Sung Park played for us. Derry, Mackie and Hill aside, nobody on the pitch that the fans could genuinely relate to. We also went from being a club that was universally liked to the club everyone wanted to see relegated. Careful what you wish for in my opinion. Nothing wrong with where we are now.

Remember how soulless the club became in the Premier League years. Not first time round when we almost won the league mate (in what was now the premier league). The club was anything but soulless. The antithesis in fact. Record gates. Great ownership. The club could never have been more united (yes of course that's a long way off where we are). Yes, nothing at all wrong with where we are now, but nothing at all wrong with showing some ambition either!

It absolutely doesn't have to be done that way, as other smaller clubs have shown.

Point taken that you don't need to make as bad a hash of it as we did last time around. I just really long for much more than we have at the moment myself. I quite like following a smaller club with fairly modest ambitions.
