A term used for the modern day footballer.
The word 'elite' is essentially only used because of the amount it costs to insure them, due to their astronomical wages. But in reality they are no 'fitter' than footballers from days of yore - diet, sports-science, modern-day footwear and pitches all notwithstanding.
One could possibly argue a footballer used to be even fitter to combat the handicaps of heavier boots, balls and vastly inferior pitch surfaces.
Thoughts? :-)

I would say players are fitter then the past but there not elite sports persons such as long distance runners, swimmers or cyclists. That’s different level elite
Footballers really need decent level of fitness and be able for their cardio system to respond to regular short bursts of energetic output

Looking at him I'd venture to suggest that Andre Gray is neither a member of the elite nor an athlete......
