Who would be your ideal manager, if you could have anyone currently plying their trade in football?
I'm going to (perhaps contentiously) nominate Thomas Tuchel. I get all the hullaballo surrounding Klopp and Guardiola, but I really rate Tuchel.

klopp 100% for me. he's already managed a club like us in mainz and got them into the uefa cup against all the odds. he's a manager who makes average players good and great players world class, you look at his teams and they play like their life is on the line. his players would run through walls for him if he said it was possible.

Guardiola is arguably the greatest of them all, but would still have Klopp.

Interesting (if totally academic) thread this. I'm of the opinion that elite Managers would probably struggle if you gave them a Championship standard side. Totally different job coaching players that have always played at the highest level and those in our league that could have come up the leagues, found football late, been chewed up and spat out by academies etc.
Love Klopp myself, but I dunno if he'd know what to do with the sort of players we've got.
I'd say the dream Manager for a club like us isn't a big name. It's probably someone like Eddie Howe. He's proving at Newcastle that his early days at Bournemouth weren't a flash in the pan. I think he's very tactically astute and seems able to get a tune out of players from varying levels of ability.

Or, conversely Tarbs, perhaps they would relish the challenge? My feeling is that a great manager could transform any team, at any level. Guardiola might be a touch too perfectionist, but I'm sure Klopp wouldn't mind getting stuck in, the same with Tuchel, who has impressed me immensely since he arrived at Chelsea following Phat Phrank's debacle and turned them round into Champion's League winners, outwitting Pep tactically in the process. Of course it's only pure fantasy, but it's interesting to imagine the difference they could make to a team like Rangers.
The same with Howe - the tramsformation he has wrought at Newcastle is spectacular. It just goes to show the huge difference a top manager can make - and would make at any team. That's why the choices apparently on offer for us now are so underwhelming.

The fact the new owners spent 100 million or something in January probably helped the transformation as well. Not saying Howe's not good, but maybe Steve Bruce could have done the same with the same amount to spend.

Look at the transformation of Joelinton, for example: from donkey under Bruce to dynamo under Howe. Plus I saw an interview with an awed Ryan Fraser where he said Howe had dramatically changed everything for the better. I think that actually proves my point: Bruce was a shit manager. Howe is a brilliant manager. Money makes some difference, but nothing like the difference a good manager can make.

I think he's very tactically astute and seems able to get a tune out of players from varying levels of ability. to be fair to klopp he's already managed and overachieved at a shit team. mainz were relegation contenders in the 2. bundesliga when he took over and ended up qualifying for the uefa cup with klopp in charge. he was relegated with them eventually but no one at the club blamed him as mainz' squad was pretty devoid of talented players. despite interest in him from across europe he still stayed at mainz for one more season to try, against the odds, to get them promoted again but only finished 4th(?) which was still impressive mind you. when he left there were thousands of mainz fans that gathered at the stadium to thank him and bid him farewell such was his impact as a player and especially as a manager. at dortmond he won the bundesliga and got them to a UCL final which again, is impressive. its paper thin between guardiola and klopp though. personally i think klopp is the better manager and if i had to pick anyone to manage us it'd be him as he's already proved he can manage shit teams and get a tune out of them. howe can too for sure and he's worked wonders at newcastle after january's investment but still klopp all the way for me

The thing about Howe is that he's root and branch, everything from diet to psychology. He reminds of Wenger.

Yea agree, managing a squad of superstars at a club with huge expectations is a totally different skill set to motivating & getting a tune from a limited squad. Neil Warnock couldn't do Pep's job, and neither could Pep do Warnock's. I personally think Pep is the guv'nor. People lazily say "he spends millions" as a way of devaluing his achievements. Yes, he does, so does every other top manager in the world - yet none of them play the type of football he does or set the bar as high as he does. He's won 4 of the last 5 PL titles including achieving the most goals in a PL season (107) + the most points in a PL season (100). Averaged almost 92 points over those 5 seasons. I like Klopp as well tbf, and the rivalry between City & Liverpool in recent years has been, for me anyway, fascinating. It isn't anything venomous, it is based solely o the fact these 2 are head & shoulders above anybody else & they have a right old go when they play eachother.
