Tactically Venables was in a different stratosphere to Southgate. Just compare their respective managerial club careers. It’s apples and oranges.
Euro 96 was his first and last tournament and got to the semis. No doubt at all in my mind he’d have had greater success with England had he been kept on.
The quality of players GS has had at his disposal were no significantly different and, as others have said, same applies to comparing the oppositions.

I think venables players on different level personally And I think the German side that knocked Tel out on pens were on a different level to the Italian side who won last year. Jürgen Klinsmann, Andreas Köpke, Andreas Möller and Matthias Sammer? Do me a fucking favour.... I just can't have Southgate mentioned in the same breath as Tel. |

One of the largest problems with our national side is the FA. Just a bunch of old farts who appoint yes men who have no spine. That's why Clough never got the job. The whole FA regime is antiquated and does not move with the times. redknapp too. he should have got the job over hodgeson. |

Toney gets picked yet does not make the bench yet 2 keepers are picked. Joker who will manage Crawley after he fucks things up with England

If the FA and Southgate had been doing their job properly then the current England U21 manager should have been the natural successor but Lee Carsley was appointed. As a stop gap I wouldn’t object to Wenger taking full control for the upcoming World Cup. Not sure I buy that mate. What Manager capable of delivering World Cups or European Championship is going to be happy coming through the system as U21 Manager? Southgate was promoted under similar circumstances, if a particularly attractive salary is offered I doubt many would turn it down with an eye on grabbing the main prize further down the line. |

At least we might be spared some of the "football's coming home" bollocks this time and there might be a bit more realism about England's chances. We seem to have gone backwards since the euros. Can't say I'm remotely excited about the World Cup yet - just frustrated it interrupts the football season. Been a very long time since my interest in an England match has equalled watching QPR (and some QPR games have been real turkeys).

But I'd agree, the massively disappointing timid style of play adopted in the final cost us the trophy. |
