Closest we came to this was in the mid 70s.
Tactically we're fifty years behind where we were then. Only have to watch us for 5 minutes to know the truth.

This is deep - thanks for posting Hal. What he discusses at the end about the relationship between football tactics, political systems and authority I found particularly fascinating.

How often in top tier Euro football do we hear the word congestion? That often happens when competent bus parkers try to counter quality attacking teams. The reason the latter sometimes struggle under those circs is because all quality Euro team basically play the same way: trying to keep their shape come what may. They aint playing whats in front of them, they're playing by rote. These guys chuck all that out of the window. Very refreshing. (btw Southgate is a prime example of a manager who sacrifices skill for shape)

I also found the part on the Europeanisation of Brazilian football interesting. I think many football fans around the world yearn for the care-free style of the all-conquering Brazilian teams of the 70s. As it says, Dunga was key in changing all that and Brazil have suffered, certainly in terms of style, and arguably in terms of results, as a consequence.

I noticed at least one occasion in the cup final where the shape mentality cost Man Utd in the last 10 mins.
Rashford gets a pass, he's back to goal on the edge of the box with his marker a little bit adrift behind him.
Instead of turning and taking on the defender he just knocks it back into the mf line who are like another 20m deeper.
That's negative, unimaginative Euro coaching right there.

Fwiwi, I agree; a pass like that gives the opposition time and opportunity to defend/regroup.

Totally agree until you see City do it (properly)with their runners coming on to the ball. Suddenly the defence is over run and they don’t know who to go to first.

Fair point and Tbh that's what a late arriving AMF is for, although the back line cover should be picking them up. But if he turns and takes on his defender suddenly its dangerous, unpredictable. The only player on the park who looked like he was up for taking defenders out was the Argentinian kid on Utd's left flank. They haven't coached that out of him yet. Problem was that as whole Utd just looked clueless going forward until his introduction.

Some of Nagelsman's attacking approach is a bit similar to Diniz, AMF and front players tight and overloading, playing their way through.
The Xabi thing is interesting, xtreme counter press. He must have them super fit.
