A controversial one due to the vitriol aimed at him for the training ground incident, and the subsequent spin by the manager to appear blameless in it all (sound familiar?) I am offering Jose Bosingwa; When he came on as sub at WBA for his debut he was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch and there were a few around, me included, who thought "what a player we have here". Soon after, a fruitless attempt to speak to the manager about why he had been dropped resulted in him locking himself in the dressing room until he got an answer. That spelt the end for him as no-one ever believed him about the culture at the club and he was just another farking useless ex Chelshite POS. Even his last appearance for us, at home to Newcastle, was the result of the manager trying to make him look bad, along with M'Bia, but my recollection of his input to that game probably differs to the popular thinking; Just before a Mags goal he won the ball and passed it back to Rob Green to belt it upfield (presumably) but Green panicked and opted instead to pass it straight back to Bosingwa who was still under pressure from the attacker so passed it back to Green to deal with and inevitably fucked it up and Bosingwa was to blame because he was the boo boy. Newcastle spotting that Bosingwa was no crowd favourite proceeded to rough him up but he stuck to his game. Deep into the second half he was upended as he received the ball and he did the footballer thing of dropping onto the ball even before the whistle was blown and, as it did, he was up on his feet and pinged a 45-50m ball onto the toes of Zamora who failed to capitalise on the chance. I believe if we had a different manager at the time we might have been raving about him at Right Back the way we did about Sansom at the end of his career.

Have to agree with that Esox.
BAE was another player that had some excellent games for us, but often recall him getting slated.

Dunno if this guy really falls into the underrated category, but 1 player we had here who I thought was absolutely top drawer but never really went anywhere with his career was Aziz Ben Askar. What an absolutely class defender that lad was.

Do you remember the night game where Dunn sliced a clearance upfield which ended up heading for the touchline over by the Paddocks and BAE hooked it out of the air and pushed it past the onrushing attacker, looked up and pinged a ball up to the edge of the penalty area for one of our players that I just can't remember ATM?

I certainly do. He showed his PL class quite a bit. Also thought it was pretty cool him going to and from work walking down SAR and getting on the tube with the rest of us on matchdays. Like a throwback to yesteryear.

I always felt that Stephane M'Bia was hugely under rated..... such a good footballer but looked like a red card waiting to happen when he played for us

I always felt that Stephane M'Bia was hugely under rated..... such a good footballer but looked like a red card waiting to happen when he played for us He was a lovely guy too. I often used to see him chatting away to fans before games and was friendly enough with a couple from Southampton that attend all our games to bring them back a Cameroon shirt after a game he featured in. I feel he was harshly treated by the fans and the club. Diakité was another who falls into that category but the mental issues after Mali war related deaths in his family possibly did for him. He looked like the next Patrick Viera when he arrived.
