Under Ainsworth we had three obvious problems:
We couldn't defend We couldn't create We couldn't score
There was also another problem. You looked at the bench and you just thought "there is no one there who can change a game, or challenge the starting 11 for a place".
For me a massive improvement under Marti is he has galvanised not just the starting 11 but about 16 players and rising:
Dixon-Boner - really knocking on the door now to start matches
Lakarche (spelling?) - two cameos and already helped helped create two goals, maybe a role for him higher up the pitch?
Willock - obviously an established player but completely sidelined under Ainsworth when he was lucky to come on for a two minute jog about in the 88th minute with the game already lost, now starting to fire again
Maybe he will do the same for Kelman next and finally unlock this supposed scoring talent? The one challenge who so far looks beyond him is Richards who hasn't taken the second chance Marti handed everyone when he arrived.
Related to this is substitutions. On the BBC live update feed last night when Cannon and Smyth were yanked off, the analyst said something like "I sometimes don't understand modern football - Preston will be delighted those two players are going off when Rangers have been on top."
But as well as keeping those players fresh he is keeping the likes of Kakay motivated. It would be very easy once a - frankly probably better - player like Cannon comes in for a Kakay to be thrown into the reserves and forgotten. He would then be de-motivated and probably not a great presence. But instead he must be thinking "I'm still in the first team picture here, there are a lot of games in the Championship, the more I improve the more game time I will get."
Sure, we still need re-enforcements, obviously a striker, but for me really impressive how Marti has found depth in a squad that most of us thought was paper-thin.

Fantastic post and example of great man management which was what we thought the main attribute of Gareth would be but it just never happened.

Love what he’s done so far to find a team and keep players interested. Just want to see Kelman given a start now to see how he does.

good post. there's still things to work on with gelling the team, our players don't ever seem to create much space tbh.
but i do like how marti is utilizing players strengths. take last night for example, cannon is a solid RB and better than kakay but kakay is certainly harder working. same goes for larkeche. bringing them on when marti did was crucial, same goes for kelman who also appears to be growing with confidence every appearence. he as of yet hasn't threatened to score but he's like a jack russell up top.

i wonder what role albert will play when he comes back? i could see him being a last 10 minutes kind of player when we're trying to grind out a result or get a goal.
guys legs and best days are gone but he still has a few tricks up his sleeve, knows how to timewaste, hold up the ball and win fouls.
its still amazing to me that after 5 games we've only lost one with 2 wins in that time. stoke had some very lucky refereeing but we were deserved winners yesterday.

That’s his best role. Can still deliver the right ball and often with quality. Will be an important player as long as he’s kept fresh. Can’t see him getting many starts but can be really useful as an impact sub

Can’t see him getting many starts but can be really useful as an impact sub I suspect the last 10 is all he's got these days. Once the legs are gone (on anyone, let alone a WB) it really is only a matter of time, over the years you see it again and again. Plus we've been addicted to bringing in / bringing back players who are simply past their sell by date. We're also seeing dem yout finally coming through (although two of the best ones are injured at the mo). That has to be the direction of travel. In the real world we wouldn't see a penny for him come January, contract notwithstanding, so use him as and when until end of term. Could be very useful to MC in training, he's seen it all before.
