Not necessarily our best ever players as it could be signings who were e.g. great pieces of business, became cult heros etc.

in my lifetime:
taarabt absolutely number 1. derry and hill gotta be up there too, came in with no fanfare and even derision from fans and went on to be great players for us. tbh most of that title winning squad could be lol.
in terms of outside the box signings though luke freeman has to make the list. signed for 350k, sold for 6m. personally i wouldn't actually include austin, he was a known commodity when we signed him and even though he excelled i'd put him down as being mishandled by the board. i think we only got 4m for him in the end as his contract was running down, irc we were getting 10m offers for him in the prior summer.
lee cook is a special mention given he gave us his signing on fee and 2.5m in the bank. danny shittu as well was great for us and we got some decent money for him.
when you think about it though we've had some real shit players or missed opportunities over the years.

Taarabt permanent signing (for one season). Clint Hill Shaun Derry Paddy Kenny Gareth Ainsworth (on the cheap, delivered in our promotion season 03/04, mainstay for us in the Championship) Martin Rowlands (as above with Ainsworth) Charlie Austin first stint with us Alejandro Faurlin Les Ferdinand Ray Wilkins Alan McDonald Ebere Eze (if that counts, as he came to us from Millwall as a youngster I believe)
All in my lifetime. There are probably more but that'll do for me.

Tony Currie - England international, think the fee was £400,000 (maybe less) and persuaded him to drop from Leeds to L2.
We did some incredible business in those days. Also a lot of El Tel's signings - eg Terry Fenwick 100 grand from Crystal Palace.

Paul Furlong is someone who springs to mind, particularly as he was not liked by some fans for 'being Chelsea' and didn't seem to make a great start. John Spencer also fits that mould. I can think of a fair few others, although you'd be hard pushed to top Stan Bowles.

Andy Thomson? At least underrated, because he never gets a mention when CF`s are discussed.

Andy Thomson? At least underrated, because he never gets a mention when CF`s are discussed. He was brilliant. That was a really shit time for the club but he was an excellent striker. Rarely mentioned too, weirdly.

Richard Dunne has got to be worth a mention. Oh-Bobby-Zamora apart, him, Clint Hill and Rob Green won us that play-off final.
Good interview with him here:

Paul Parker, fantastic player who could leap like a salmon. We paid itro £350k to Fulham and sold him for around £2m to Man U Used to play in the same junior team as him, Pegasus, in Hornchurch. His dad couldn't be arsed to take him, so we picked him up, and dropped him off every week. Great little player, and he went to Fulham with a few of the team. Dean Coney was from the same area, but different team. Got to know Dean quite well, but haven't seen him for a few years. Sometimes see Paul at mutual friends events.

Not a lot more to say really. Haven't seen either of them for a bit. I know Dean ended up doing odd jobs, and a bit of driving, and Paul used to commentate on Premier League games in Singaapore.
