I used to coach my son's team (the same son who walked down to Loftus Road with a picture of Lord Kinnock a few weeks ago for the Preston match) between the ages of 6 and 12 (when parent politics got too stressful and I quit...).
It was always the home team's responsibility to provide a qualified referee. We were playing away at the mighty Ridgeway, no referee was supplied and their coach 'volunteered' to referee the game.
He was unbelievably, blatantly biased towards his own team. Blew offsides against lino's opinion, gave fouls against us for nothing, let fouls against our boys go, but we were still winning.
He added an inordinate amount of time to the end of the game for absolutely no reason - the game just kept going and going.
Then their team attacked, one of our defenders put a simple block in on a shot, didn't even make contact with the attacker - penalty, from which they equalised.
Their boys were shaking their heads saying it was never a penalty and that the ref, their coach, was embarrassing.
Don't know his name, but I'd nominate the Ridgeway Ref every time.

Loftus OMG I know this experience with my son. When there is a qualified ref you get an ok game but if it’s a parent or manager running game it can be a complete waste of time.
I often run the line and have had stand up rows with dodgy manager refs and parents.

I often run the line and have had stand up rows with dodgy manager refs and parents. We've had fights between 'rival' parents at matches, 14 year old refs abused and threatened by parents, 8 year old kids running off the pitch in tears after tirades of verbal abuse from their own coaches. What is wrong with people FFS!? Talking of running the line, I played for a local team and was sub one day. There was a linesman short, so I volunteered. We 'scored' a goal, but it was offside and I flagged it. I was not Mr Popularity at half time...  |
