Early days but seems to be agreement that we won't struggle and have a good squad with alternatives in all positions so who is for taking a cup seriously?

Really depends on who comes out the hat. Prem sides in draw now so realistically you pull one of them and the run is over

So if we beat Pompey and draw decent team do we play first team or roll over?

So if we beat Pompey and draw decent team do we play first team or roll over? 1st team. But tomorrow night we use the squad. IMO. Fortunately though we have good strength in depth now, as Bristol in the cup showed.

All day long for me. Try to go deep in to this cup as our young team could suprise one or two bigger clubs should we draw them.

Kelly Masterson Toni Barbet Kane Wallace Ball Bright Chair Pugh Hugil He's not a keen on a 3. And I'm not keen on a 3 with Toni and Barbet providing 2/3rds of it...... a little bit of pace and they'll get turned.

Interesting - he has very seldom gone down that route in the past. 4-2-3-1 for like 90% of his games or thereabouts. He was also fairly critical of our back line on Saturday. I wasn't there, but I got the impression that we weren't at the races at all for the first 45, did he play with WBs throughout?

Actually he started the game with a 4-4-2 (again unusual for him) which turned out disastrously as the first half showed. That's what he criticised and rightly so. 2nd half he changed it to a 3-5-2 (replacing Scowen with BFG), and the contrast and improvement in our play was incredible to see. Case of a genuine 'game of two halves'!

Much better side with 3 at the back and more importantly made our left hand side defensively stronger.

His tactics do have his FB playing high up the pitch. This suits Manning but does leave the left flank exposed. Normally Cameron would drop back and Barbet would move over. This was not happening 1st half Saturday. If you put an extra man in defence you normally weaken somewhere else.

Seemed to be the opposite for us on Saturday as BFG sorted Garner out who bullied Barbet first which then helped Manning out as well. This then allowed our forward players to do their thing in Wigan's half.

Must admit, I always thought you can't play WBs unless a) they're really good atheletes and b) the back three are pretty composed. Thats exactly where Ollie got found out. We just didn't have the calibre of players to make it work...
Its good we can be flexible and it could be fine in the cup but vs quality? Who knows. One of the problems with the 4 is who fits in where, jury seems to be out on that.

I think the 3 at the back is better for us while Manning is at left back gives more protection as both he and Barbet are not the quickest or the best defensively.

What impressed me about the switch was the ease - they clearly knew how to play it so options are obviously worked on.
