Isn't that strange a move in my opinion. From what I've seen, Lumley is the only keeper in the squad that is genuinely ready to play Championship level football. Kelly didn't look up to the job in pre-season, and everything I've seen of him playing up in Scotland would back that up.
Dieng probably looks like the next best keeper in the squad from what I've seen, and he's out on loan. Dillon Barnes, I have no idea why we signed him. Colchester fans rated him as not good enough to play there, and they're in League 2. Maybe Warburton sees him as a player with potential to improve with the right coaching.
A few have been questioning Lumley's performances in recent weeks. I understand why, he's made some right howlers. For me, the problem is how he's being asked to play. He tries to play far too much football, and his skills with the ball at his feet aren't good enough to pull it off. But regardless, if there is an experienced keeper good enough for this level available on a free, it might be exactly what we need at the moment. Whether it allows us to drop Lumley, or simply spurs him on to perform better, it can't hurt can it?

Whether it allows us to drop Lumley, or simply spurs him on to perform better, it can't hurt can it? You would think the signing of Kelly would spur him on? If this blokes an improvement on Kelly and Lumley then get him in and ship one out. If he is just here to play back up then we don't need him as Kelly does the job as a back up (I haven't seen him play). Maybe Heinz is better with his feet. Barnes would be here just to be 3rd choice as Dieng is out on loan. He won't be costing a lot and can play in u23 team.. Probably won't ever make his debut with us unless we have injuries and suspensions.

Whether it allows us to drop Lumley, or simply spurs him on to perform better, it can't hurt can it? It can't hurt at all. Perhaps Warbs looked at Lumley's unforced error against Luton and it royally pissed him off, secretly. The incident was twofold: a) It was careless and sloppy, and b) It was the catalyst that changed the complexion of the whole game, in which we ended winning but only just, when we should have cruised to an easy victory having been 3-0 up on 30 mins. A few days later we're reported as being interested in a new goalkeeper. Coincidence? I have my doubts. Warbs clearly rates Lumley, but perhaps feels now is the time to give him greater competition.

Can't see why we are looking at an Internationally capped, played in European competitions goalkeeper who won't cost a bean when we haven't kept a clean sheet all season......just so puzzling...

He might have had injuries and be past his best now. Or asking for a ton of money. Who knows, but there must be a reason no other clubs have snapped him up.

Kelly was a questionable piece of business. Was he really any better in Scotland than Senny D? Not convinced.
Effectively we have one keeper and he's not exactly error free. So this makes sense.

No gaffer would ever, under any circumstances, squander any part of the playing budget on someone who is simply good to have around or who may one day become a great manager.... Especially these days when you have a large non playing staff on the books. On the Senny D front, we've got the option in January.
