Nonsense, there was hardly any pitch left to stay onside. If this was an isolated example I'd back off and give him benefit of the doubt but time and again you see he has no striker's instinct. It’s impossible to get that ball and stay onside

Ok so I’ve just watched the whole game again and I stand by my statement, Dykes was decent, he was QPR’s most productive out ball, he allowed the team to get up the pitch by winning his fair share of aerial duels, and even if he didn’t win the initial contact, because he’s putting in a challenge, a lot of the time the ball is falling to another QPR player or is going out for a QPR throw. Don’t quite know what you guys are expecting, most centre half’s are 6’3 or taller, you put any CF in the world up against them and pump up long balls and no CF in the world is going to win everything. He linked up play reasonably well when the opportunity presented itself, he worked his socks off again, though you don’t seem to recognise that either. I’d put money that out of all the QPR players Dykes is consistently clocking up more km per match than probably any other player during a game, Chair too probably is up there. Now here’s the player rating from the West London Sport Lyndon Dykes: 5 Got little change from a rugged Blackburn defence, won little in the air and his hold up play was poor. Forced off after being dazed by the arm of Lenihan in an aerial challenge. Go and watch the game again and tell me that Dykes didn’t compete in the aerial duels, and come back and tell me when in the game his hold up play was poor, not in the game I’ve just rewatched. Now these guys have got Bonne as a 6, Adomah as a 6, Bettache as a 7, which is laughable. You’re trying to tell me that all these players have a more positive impact for the team in a few minutes then Dykes did grafting his tits off for 80 minutes, laughable. But then again they also gave Dom Ball an 8 and Johansen a 7, when I didn’t think the midfield were anywhere near that good. Their passing was sloppy most of the game, Dom Ball was lucky to stay on the park. RS, I agree entirely with your assessment. However for some reason you have ignored/overlooked the most important point of all which Alan and many others have pointed out. He's scored one solitary goal in open play - in 25 games. Every striker, all their other attributes notwithstanding, are ultimately always judged on their GPG ratio. You should know this and shouldn't need me or anyone else to point that out. I like him as a player, his honesty and with all the other qualities he brings. As a QPR fan, as much as anyone, really hopes he comes good and will him on to do so. But so far, he's simply not done it yet.

Here’s another little fact about Dykes that you may not have noticed, he’s played a lot of games and is having to compete in a lot of aerial duels etc, he’s picked up 2 yellow card this season. So he’s grafting and fighting up front but he’s not a liability, he’s competing fairly and isn’t picking up lots of bookings or getting sent off. that is not a positive for me actually makes me think CB are getting an easy outing

Another little stat for you guys: Austin and Dykes have started 4 games together QPR have won 3 and lost 1, and that was the game against Derby when there was only Ball in midfield. It must be luck though because Dykes is a passenger There's only two stats i want to know regarding any striker rscot. how many assists and how many goals. supposedly, our main striker (dykes) has contributed 1 goal (from open play) in 25 games, one bloody goal. christ, even the postman had a better goals to games ratio.

Go and watch the game again and tell me that Dykes didn’t compete in the aerial duels, and come back and tell me when in the game his hold up play was poor, not in the game I’ve just rewatched. That´s true, rscot. He is good winning balls in the air and his link up play is sometimes very good, eg. against Luton. Also the assist mentioned above (for Chair if memory serves me right) was top class. It just looks as if his decision making in the box is not quite what you expect from a striker, but it might be that playing with a greedy BOS and Chair for half a year has affected his timing, and constantly trying to figure out where the next mishit pass will end up, if one is even produced at all. I think we all hope and pray he´ll come good, but if he is not producing a consistent level of goals, assists or just key passes, I don´t think you can blame the fans for wanting to see another striker get the chance now and again.

i'm 6'4 and could probably win my fair share of headers too in the pro game, i wouldn't be able to direct or do anything with the aerial duels but i reckon i could out header a fair portion of the opponents team.
thats pretty much what dykes is doing. i know people on here LOVE their stats so here's some stats on dykes. 1.5 shots per game, bare in mind only 12 of those have been on target. pass success rate of 58%, resulting in only 1 assist. he has a key pass stat of 0.7 per game too.
he wins 5 aerial duels a game, but stats and our own eyes show that not much is done with that success as he would either have more key passes or assists.
more difficult to find how much he runs per 90 though.
i do rate dykes and think he'll be a good player for us. he's in his own head and struggling to find his style in our team.
i certainly don't believe he's half as good as rscot is making him out to be and to say otherwise, despite what the stats, facts and our own eyes tells us is ludicrous. 1 goal from open play is abysmal for a striker. yes i know that not all strikers are prolific goalscorers, like firmino, but an aged injury prone austin is doing more to lead the line and frighten defenders than a fully fit, mobile and strong player like dykes.

Even last season when we had Hughill and Wells both were scoring goals for fun yet MW more often than not only played One up top..
I fully expect MW to eventually revert to type if and when safety is achieved so where would Dykes figure then if he’s not a regular goal scorer ?

Without Dykes on the pitch against Blackburn, you'd be looking at a point maximum. Theres no one else in your squad that can physically battle big centre halves for 90 minutes +, there is no way QPR could have played the style that they did against Blackburn without him. now i dont think MW set out to play that type of game, but because the midfield wasnt so effective on the ball, the pattern of play reverted to a long, direct style of play, and its only because of Dykes that QPR can play that style of game.

Could you do it repeatedly for 90 minutes + with big heavy, strong guys leaning on you, elbowing you, headbutting you? And why wasnt that a yellow card and a freekick to QPR? im not one who shouts for people to get booked, but isnt the rule that there doesnt need to be intention? Dykes clearly won the header before being fouled? Youre judging his stats when the majority of the season the whole team wasnt functioning. The team is functioning now, and most importantly WINNING, and he is a part of it The forward line looks very good to me, whether you want to call it a 2 with Dykes and Austin or a 3 including Chair. I think they’ll be very successful for the rest of the season, and Dykes will play his part in that success as he has done since the line up was introduced.

I bet that Blackburn backline will tell you that that game against QPR was one of the toughest physical and mental battles theye had this season I bet you Cameron, Dickie and Barbet will tell you that Dykes is a real handful in training, and i bet wouldnt fancy playing against him.

Mate not every 6ft 3 centre forward can do what Dykes does for 90 minutes +, his work rate and stamina are a big asset. If MW sticks with the same personnel, same formation, I’d expect QPR to batter a number of teams in this league before the end of season, I’d also expect to see QPR score “late” goals quite regularly as the attacking unit (Austin, Chair and Dykes + subs) are going to grind down (physically and mentally) many defences over the 90 minutes. No doubt there’s a step up from the SPL to the Championship, but the biggest difference in my opinion was going from a functioning team to a dysfunctional team. Do you want me to start listing the chances from just the last game? Ok just a couple from the top of my head, long throw from Wallace, Dykes wins the aerial duel, ball falls to Chair, shot blocked, falls to Kane, puts a very good chance wide of the left hand post Ball in from Kane on the right, Dykes flicks it to Charlie who’s goal bound shot is blocked/deflected, Wallace picks up the ball at the edge of the box, is fouled, free kick is given, goal is scored from resulting free kick. Wins back ball on the edge of the box, to me fairly, QPR have a 3 on 1 overload, but the ref blows the whistle and gives the free kick to Blackburn. Dykes closes down Blackburn player on the halfway line, forces a poor pass, that Dom Ball heads to Chair, QPR have a very good opportunity on the break, but Chair takes too long to play the pass to the on rushing Dykes, allows the defender time to get back, pass is blocked for a corner to QPR That’s just off the top of my head, I’m sure there’s more if I was to go back and watch the match again.

Winning is more important to me, and if Dykes is contributing to the success of the team without scoring, then I’d be happy, ideally he’ll be scoring and contributing to the teams success. the whole Dykes thing is simple. He's a converted striker, he's not a natural. And it shows. It's not his fault we signed him as a 9, that's typical Rs, look at the Washington fiasco. He put in a shift too, but the stats that matter for a striker are goals and assists.
All the rest is pissing in the wind.
