Agree. Key there though is ‘areas he SHOULD be in’.

Hoofball might suit Dykes. Alan, I replied at the same time as you. If you read my post above it's certainly not hoofball. I was referring to accurate crosses into the box which is very different. eg Chair's the other day, and Kakay's recently - both of which resulted in perfectly executed headers by Dykes.

Some good points being made - Ainsworth has said he wants balls in the box. If that plays to Dykes’ strengths why did we buy a player like him when that wasn’t the style we were trying to create as our identity? And if the idea is you bring in a coach to get the best out of the squad he’s given why did we insist on playing a style that didn’t suit our main striker? If (I think when) we stay up it will be very interesting to see what Ainsworth does next season.

If Dykes had good positional awareness or a predators eye for goal or even pace to get in behind a defence I would accept changing our teams play style to suit him, sadly he’s lacking in all those departments.

Were they not demonstrated in his superbly taken goal against West Brom? Let's give the guy break...

Alan’s earlier comment about him being suited to Ainsworth hoofball was exactly what I wrote after the WBA game but then decided not to post it I don’t want to get frustrated any more after watching Dykes flop for nearly 3 seasons despite the spin put on him about helping out at corners etc Suddenly seeing one Swallow certainly doesn’t make a summer Loftus.

I’ve never known a player shown so much patience by a club or fans.

Obvs the main reason he's been cut a bit more slack lately is because he was very recently in hospital with tubes coming out of him.
Yes he scored a cracking goal on Monday.
Could he be more consistent? Clearly.
Are there signs Gaz is starting to play more to his strengths (a la Scotland), and with a strike partner which also seems to suit him better? Yes to both of those questions too.
Let's see how he performs in the next 5 games and if he can fire in the goals to keep us up.

Its hard to think of a single player who has covered himself in much glory this season. The confidence of every player is shot and they are miles off where they should be. Endlessly telling them how crap they are doesn't help unless they are completely arrogant. My impression (might be completely wrong) is that our players tend not to be cock of the walk types, they seem totally lost to me. This is a thread of 54 pages - must be one of the longest on here - basically repeating again and again how crap he is. No one is saying he is the next Les Ferdinand. He's a lump. But he's our lump so might as well get behind him. He tends to score in streaks, Lyndon, (fairly short streaks, its true), so lets just cheer him on and see where it gets us. One point at the weekend, another point next weekend and Lyndon doing the basics is one more player doing the basics - along with Chair and Field. Lets get behind them and maybe one or two other players might step up the week after. Harsh Stains. You must have missed the huge section of this thread where he's been totally eulogised by RScot. And tbf Tarbs and I have stuck up for him a few times too. 😎

Even I was nice about him once - see OP - but it soon went downhill. The first few pages of this thread make interesting reading especially if you consider how long ago they were posted. And with one of the best CFs sitting in the stand it gives lie to the idea that we develop players. Or he’s a lost cause.

I’d add that I’ve noticed a few posters lately suggesting he will be our most saleable asset this summer - don’t know if that reflects he might not be quite as useless as some say or reflects that maybe other players must be about as rated as Diane Abbot at a synagogue

No coincidence for me that Dykes has put in a couple of slightly better performances since Martin arrived - just as he did when Austin first came back. Someone alongside side him showing him what he ought to be doing. Makes it even more of a nonsense that our DOF hasn’t tried to sort him out in three years. Or maybe he has, which is a very depressing thought.
