Just an observation really. Many posters, like me, have migrated over from another message board, and this has been the first transfer window on the island. The huge difference has been the reaction to Lyndon Dykes departing. Posters on here seem to be delighted that we are losing our third striker without any strong suggestions that he will be replaced. It seems that people would rather have no-one in the squad than keep him. I appreciate that he is has been a high earner and has generally underperformed and saving his wages will help with FFP, but I can recall how pleased posters were on the old site when we secured a new contract for Dykes at a time when we were completely up against the wall with FFP. It was a huge relief at the time, and it was unexpected. He frustrated me when watching, but was useful defending corners, and scored a great goal at Sheffield United. The fact we only got £1m for him (allegedly) says it all, that must be his market value, but if we announce that we are signing a £1m striker between now and tomorrow night, posters would generally be delighted. So I don't quite get the dancing in the streets that we are a striker down, and it is a big difference to over on Report.

I am one that doesn't share the hatred for Dykes that many do tbh. That said, I am not upset at him going (for a reasonable fee) at all as he was pretty gash for the most part, good business from the club. Wish him well though.

Instead of Dykes Frey and Armstrong we have Celar Frey and Kolli/Lloyd - I’d argue that’s better. Why the club considered Dykes worth a pay rise is a mystery not a huge relief. Over four years the guy rarely rose above hopeless.

I suspect RFI is fairly atypical of forums regarding the whole Dykes issue. Personally speaking, I agree with Matty (and others) above in that I bear him no ill-will whatsoever, and said earlier I wish him well at Birmingham. I can understand some of the fans' frustrations with him over the years though, and this thread is certainly testament to that being that it's by far the longest in our five year history.

That poll did cover a lot of fair points though - effort, lack of any improvement, playing without the ball, three/four years etc. This forum isn’t full of rose-tints so makes for better debate.

Yes, the debate is healthy. There are plenty of ex-QPR players who have become targets for vitriol, usually with justifiable cause. In Fernandes days, we had players who were just banking the money and had dreadful attitudes. Although we do not know the full story with Taylor Richards, the message boards were generally united in their condemnation - similarly with Roberts, Laird etc. But not so with Dykes. He always worked hard, often running and not receiving from Chair and Willock. He worked hard in the community and was apparently popular within the club. That is why most people wish him well (I think) across the message boards. I think he was just not that good, especially about being in the right place. The opposite of a fox in the box in fact. But to me, still an option from the bench, and better than nothing....unless we have better arriving, or we were desperate for the £1m and wages. If we take in a loan as replacement, we will be developing for others. Nearly 100 pages because he split opinion so much. He was not cheap, he has disappointed, but I think he tried his best...so like Stains said above, I too don't really get the vitriol on here.

Good post Herts. I feel a bit like Stan and you and Matty really. Hard to dislike the bloke because he did give a shit at least. We can do better for a lot less money though. Hopefully there will be a replacement incoming. A loan I would imagine.

By the sounds of it, his popularity within the club and his efforts in the community should allow him a certain degree of respect.
I would say that our seemingly never ending propensity to avoid getting in a striker who scores goals, is far more to blame for the frustration than a guy who did his best but constantly struggled.
Hardly surprising really as wasn’t really brought up playing football to any standard and then had to play in Scotland!😂

Hence why many including myself have said it's not personal against him as a man, just him as a very shit footballer. exactly this. always came across as a top bloke and can't fault him for his lack of trying it's simply that the trying was in vain as he was an awful player for us. no ill will towards him, hopefully he does well at birmingham and good for him for getting a bigger bag down there. for me his position even as a player off the bench was untenable, i'd simply rather not have him and to look for something different on the bench whether that be an academy player or an actual donkey. yes it sometimes worked out bringing him off the bench when chasing a lead but more often than not it didn't, the only times he'd come in handy off the bench was when we were trying to close out a game as he had a knack for defensive headers. good luck to him but i'm glad he's gone.

Decent bloke, put a shift in and never hid.
While others were reported to be feigning injury when we were at our worst last season, Dykes was in hospital with pneumonia, hauled himself out of his sick-bed in time to score a few vital goals which helped keep us up.
Not our greatest ever striker, but I certainly won't be booing him if he ever plays at Loftus Road for Brum.

The vitriol was far more due to the failure of the club to bring in one half decent striker in a decade. If he had been back up to Nakki Wells, say, I think he would have been reasonably popular. But as he was our main striker for four years it tested the patience of some fans beyond breaking point.

Everyone suddenly gone all sentimental and rose tinted about him. His stats here were appalling. Abysmal. Why? Because the person responsible for recruiting him couldn't spot a striker in a billion years. The same person, incidentally, who rated Kellman as a red hot sharp shooter. Why? Because Les was appointed by an 'all the gear, no idea' mentality which ultimately took us to a hair's breadth of the third tier. Fuck all of them, frankly. I'll be happier when Hoos is on his arse and out of the door, then we can finally close the chapter.
