I honestly think anyone not capable of putting in a proper shift is going to be surplus to requirements. Has Stefan still got it in him? This is a new reality checkpoint for pretty much everyone at the club. twitter.com/Ross201189

The only box Stefan could have got into last season was a wooden one.....

The only box Stefan could have got into last season was a wooden one..... Huge disappointment, wasn't he? I do feel a bit sorry for him though. Amos was the only other number 8 up to the job, and he was coming back from a bad injury. Stefan has his place in a better balanced squad.

Think some are forgetting that SJ was being played while carrying an injury towards the end of last season (due to small squad and no better CM options). You have to make allowances for that. With a good pre-season behind him and time to recover I think we can expect a rejuvenated player going into the new season.

With a good pre-season behind him and time to recover I think we can expect a rejuvenated player going into the new season. I thought SJ performances were generally poor over the whole season, too often opponents just waltzed past him albeit due to possibly carrying an injury from the outset. I would be more hopeful of him fitting in with MB plans if there had been news of him having surgery since the season finished.

That said SJ did really piss me off at home to Fulham. Soaking up the applause from the Fulham fans, whilst he hobbled off slowly when we were losing 1-0.
Proper Captain would have got off the pitch sharpish and would have been shouting instructions to his players as he went.
One of my biggest gripes of Warburton's tenure. He built a squad/team that was really soft at the centre. When the going got tough we just rolled over, more often than not.
Part of the reason I was keen on Ainsworth. I reckon he'd have brought a bit if pride in the shirt back.

Would like him to come out and own it if he did have a injury last season

Not expecting any change this coming season. He's run his race.

I would guess he’s recently had an op looking at his knee.

Yeah, that does look suspiciously like a reasonably fresh scar doesn't it? Would explain a lot.

Injury aside once your pace has gone it's gone . Lost count of the number of times the oppo ran past him last season .

Injury aside once your pace has gone it's gone . Lost count of the number of times the oppo ran past him last season . Pace may be gone, but passing, vision and class don't fade. A lot of classy players go on into their late 30s - Modric still bossing it at 36, Pirlo went on even older. If SJ can recapture his early form, he'll be a great asset this coming season.

Gazza did, and he was never the same after his knee injury, and Stef is a lot older than Gazza was whne he did his. Very few people come back to their highest level after that kind of injury. And he was miles off last term. Massive gamble for me.

I don't think it was just his legs. He was on the beach for the whole of last season. The article said nothing that was anywhere near interesting, insightful or encouraging.

Not comparing SJ with Pirlo and Modric, simply using them as examples of players who continued to contribute despite their relative lack of pace in their 30s.

I'm really hoping a good rest and a decent pre-season sees Johansen recapture some of the form we saw of him during his loan spell.
This might sound harsh, but I'd pick a new captain. Tell Stefan to concentrate on his own get and give someone who's more likely to start every week the armband.

When you're on the bench as often he's been, in a squad as threadbare as ours, and when you are on the park you can't run = problematic injury issues imo We can't carry passengers. That simple.

We aint in that class.

If he`s not fit enough to perform I agree with you, but his injury now sounds sorted. Having said this, I feel we need another proven midfielder in...Exciting times ahead in many ways...
