But this is the thing Hal, we axe the deadwood up front and we barely have enough for one decent Championship striker (not even a quality one) and we have less cover. Striker is the hardest position to fill without spending big, which is something we just can't do. Some xant seem to accept that. Totally get that but there was the option to get a striker in way before MB took up the reins. We ended up with Jeff Hendrick. Since then we have spent money but again not been looking at no9s. During this period other clubs at our level have picked up goalscorers for relatively low money, eg Joel Piroe who went to Swansea for 1m a year ago and ended up with 21 goals. We paid twice that for Dykes.I just wish someone could explain why we have this massive blind spot re strikers. Excellent piece of scouting AND business that. Mind you they had an even worse season than us.

For what it’s worth a few on the Villa forum calling for Archer to be sent on loan after limited game time on their Aussie tour.

I still cant understand how we paid 2m for a rugby league player with an mpg of one every 600 fucking minutes. In Scotland. Les knew where the back of the net was but he literally has absolutely no clue when it comes to identifying a striker.

Reports suggest Gerrard is deciding whether to loan out Archer this week. To be optimistic perhaps this is what we are waiting on? Am sure Les, Beale etc would love to have had their number 9 in the building for pre-season but we are like the bloke with his cap out under the arches at Waterloo, waiting to see what he is thrown. We don't hold many cards. What we can hopefully offer is playing football the right way, a (recent) record of developing players and a close relationship with the Villa management. Hopefully we also have a plan B, but we are probably not the only club in town interested in that player either. Frustrating as it we just have to cross fingers. My expectations are modest for this season so if we do land someone of Archer's quality that would be a massive bonus suddenly elevating us to fairly decent outside bets for the play offs.

On the transfer thread Ginger says rumours of Armstrong from S,ton on loan. So could be Archer and Archer or Armstrong and Armstrong in the squad😃

LFW reporting talk of Archer going to Watford Although 2 weeks ago I saw the Athletic print a piece saying Watford would be interested in loaning Archer, LFW is probably guessing like the rest of us. If it’s about the largest transfer or loan fee then it’s probably Watford, if it’s not about money then he’s coming here imo.

2021/22: Strikers' MPG (in all competitions)
140 Gray 265 Austin 305 Dykes
Source: transfermarkt.co.uk
Yet it's still never been explained why Gray wasn't kept on. The stats don't lie.

If the board do not deliver on new additions, striker and Rb minimum by end of transfer window they spout nothing but hot air.

Wages out Barbet,Austin Moses,Gray,Wallace,Ball.
Wages in Salter,Paal,Richards,Roberts I think.
Think those wages more than those coming in.
I've probably forgot some.

Yeah but think we massively over-spent last season to “go for it”. You have to balance the books within I think 39m over three years (so can “lose” 13m a year). Assuming we didn’t go up this was always going to be a year of belt tightening. If we are losing a million quid in an average month we are very close to the spend ceiling
