How confident/ worried are you by our defence? I haven't seen our new centre back Jake Salter-Clark and its clear the club recognise we need a right back so still some unanswered questions. But specifically the centre of defence. Warbs moved to three at the back largely for Barbet because Yohan was good on the ball and a valuable member of the team but in a "two" looked vulnerable. But not convinced Barbet was the only reason for that. What about the two we will now presumably play? For all his gutsy performances and attitude Dunne made a lot of goal-costing errors last season. Dickie second half of the season rarely dominated in the way you felt he was capable of. Even with three centre halves our "goals against" column was not the greatest. The new manager said in an interview that the centre backs were now experienced enough to play effectively without an older chaperon in a three and they have to prove they are up to it. But are they? (I can't comment on JSC as can't recall ever seeing him play but presumably others have, if indeed he starts ahead of either Dunne or Dickie)? Maybe with dedicated full backs we will snuff out more danger from the wings but Dunne and Dickie have often looked vulnerable to the quick or high ball over the top.
Stef used to frustrate me last season fannying around with the ball standing in line with the centre halves but maybe this season he (or Field or whoever) has a more crucial role there cutting out attacks and not leaving our centre halves exposed.

However keeping stum atm otherwise

We will know in 3 weeks if we are strong enough

No reason that they cant work as a 4 at the back. Extra man in midfield can pressure higher up and make us more solid that way. 3 at the back can lead to a bit more confusion, as to who is what persons man.
Time will tell, but a RB is def needed. Surprised we didn't keep Moses to be honest, he would be a good back up and can play either side when needed.

Plan A = 4.
Yeah we'll let in a few but his set up makes goal scoring opportunities far more likely than under Warburton imo.
Which is why I think the striker situation is the most important issue. I don't think Mick sees it that way though. He apparently sees all forwards inc AMFs as utility strikers.
Which is great if you got the staff.... if you dont, you need a proper 9 somewhere on the books.

It would work his way if we had a young Adel with a Heider type number 9 whose main role is to lay the ball off successfully but good as Ilias and Chris are as discussed already I don't think they can do it without more help than just the Leeds lad.

tbh i think dunne and dickie are both upper level defenders in the championship, only issue is that they have the speed of a snail.

A: Wheeeeeeee!

For all his gutsy performances and attitude Dunne made a lot of goal-costing errors last season. Really? That wasn't my impression, Rod. Thought he was one of our better players overall. Corbs makes the point that he's not the quickest which is fair but couldn't fault him much other than that.

Obvs respect your opinion Stanley but I thought he was one of those players who the fan-base bought into as much for his attitude as anything else so got off lightly for errors compared to some others who were judged perhaps more harshly (Field was another one like that, until perhaps the last month or two of the season when it all got a bit more toxic). Not saying with Dunne it was every week - far from it - and I still like and rate him, but he sure did commit some howlers. Can't at this distance give you chapter and verse but from memory I would offer you Preston at home.

That's probably fair Corbray, all I would say to that is with the growth of sports science etc, speed gets more vital. So to say someone is a great defender but slow is a bit like saying someone is brilliant at making perfumes but they don't have a sense of smell... A centre half like Frank Mclintock who was great for us in the twilight of his career would now struggle - however brilliant his anticipation, physicality (read "ability to foul without giving away a free kick"), heading ability etc.

Certainly think there are initial signs of him Improving players. Kakay and dozzell jump out and lesser so Armstrong (need see more progression in Him). Does Dunne get straight back in ahead of Kakay? Does JCS remove fox as he looked superb when he replaced Cook who himself was a rock. I think Fox has been superb and should keep his place. Dunne and Cook will have to fight their way back in or wait til JCS gets injured (fingers crossed he doesn't but it seems inevitable).

Cook has been our best CB this season. 1st half yesterday he was outstanding. But he's injured now and we don't know how bad it is. JCS looked very good too when he came on so I'd stick with him, Fox and Kakay as the back three. Dunne has to fight his way back now and earn the shirt.

Playing out from the keeper worries me because we’re not very good at it. I get that if successful you’ve taken out half of the opposing team but that idea is nothing new - players like Glen Hoddle used to do it with one pass. Playing out looks great but it does seem to have become an obsession at the expense of other plays.

It does concern me, but then if it concerns us you'd think it concerns Marti and Xavi too and they'll hopefully address it.

As far as I’m aware playing out from the Back has not resulted in any goals conceded so we’re not that bad at it.
We had this problem when Warburton started it, people saying can’t do it but more we done better we got and the stress of watching it evaporated. Just a shame we decided to tear up the handbook under Ainsworth and change style totally going back to where we started.

Have a few lemons sat near me who scream bloody murder when we play out about "getting rid of it!" - then if we do lump if forward the same folk comlpain about giving the ball away when their centre half inevitable smashes a header back down our throats lol

I seem to recall it indirectly leading to one goal recently (don't remember which game). However it does frequently result in us conceding possession, which is a concern and one I'm confident MC will work on.

The ultimate outcome should be a blend of styles but I’m not too fussed about playing out as thus far we do it ok, especially now Dunne is not involved as in fairness to him he really struggled but it’s not his game, but we have not really turned it into any meaningful attacks which in theory is the point but you can see the pattern and the triggers especially on the left side between JCS, Paal and Chair. Practice makes perfect.
