Now that Les has gone would you rather just have a manager/head coach in overall charge of football matters?
Or do you still believe a club of our size actually needs a DoF with all the advantages as well as complications and expense that role can bring? Factoring in too the incompetence levels of our owners.
For context, apparently under half (11 out of the 24) Championship clubs currently employ a DoF.
Poll added.

We are actively interviewing for a direct replacement for Les apparently.

Sorry for the typo on the 2nd poll option. Obviously should have been "No". (Won't let me edit it).

Think the fact Ainsworth has totally different opinion of what squad should look like actually reinforces the value of a DOF or we’re going build a team of lump it forwards players and if he goes then expect next man work with that squad.

Maybe we can only afford to play Ainsworth’s way? If so, we need to get a few results and rebuild some confidence around the club before moving forward again. Let’s be honest, the only mentality that exists at the moment is a losing one.

If we had a defined, long-term strategy, then no - can you imagine El Tel working under a DoF?
But if we are going to churn through managers left right and centre, then perhaps we do need one.
I suppose if we were to get a decent DoF then it will be a great idea. Get a crap one and it won't.
Who the f*** knows...?

I'll try to rephrase it: Assuming a decent manager was already in place (granted jury is currently out on that!), would a club of our size and budget be better off with or without a DoF?

Don’t think it’s about having decent manager it’s the rate we go through them which is the defining issue.

Don’t think it’s about having decent manager it’s the rate we go through them which is the defining issue. The reason we go through them mate Is we have cocks choosing the wrong ones They need to do their homework And appoint an already successful manager Someone who has a record of promotion Someone who is a winner Until this happens we go in circles Use Les money go get your man

If you appoint the correct man
You go from being a shit club
To a good club with a new training ground
Its all about the right man in as manager
Fuck the Dof pay the peas for a great manager
Set the club up around him
We would have been promoted if its wasnt for Les

Still believe Warbs was the right man Great football but fell out with the Ego Who then made it clear his days were numbered
Right in the middle of our promotion chase All the players knew this and the manager We collapsed because of internal politics
Let the manager manage Thats what they did with warnock Look how that ended up

Nathan Jones would put you in the top 10 For starters even though i hate him
Div 1 managers will eventually equal Div 1 football
Like if you only date ugly women You will probably marry one in the end Need to aim higher bat out of your league Ambition we used to have it We need to get it back

Wilder at Middlesbrough and Watford was a car crash Potter at Chelsea. All decent highly thought of mangers failing at certain clubs. Need way more then decent manager you need right structure too in bulk of scenarios.

Warnock would had us in or around the play offs as we were on a bit of a run.

I might take issue with Dave Mac there. Clubs have always had CEOs, no dispute there. However I think he's incorrectly conflating that job with a DoF. As said above, less then half of Championship clubs employ a DoF; and the size of the club also needs factoring into whether one is needed.

Manager identifies players, CEO / Board deal with money and agents. Simple.
No need for a DoF IMO

Manager identifies players, CEO / Board deal with money and agents. Simple. No need for a DoF IMO And then when we sack the manager, we buy new players for the new manager. A good DOF will have a style and discuss with the manager and then work to bring them in. A dof should work well, you just need a good one.

Why can’t a manager have his style and ask the club to bring in players he wants if they can afford them? Why does a club our size need a middle man? DOF gets it wrong and manager gets sacked doesn’t seem right to me.

Al, I think part of the problem these days is the job of securing players in the top few divisions is more complex than in days gone by. In the Warnock era here there were still players in the game that started their careers without agents. Hence Warnock could get on the phone to 4 or 5 of his trusted senior players and say "I'm going to QPR, do you want to come with".
These days agents are tapping players up when they are still in academy football. I don't think it's any exaggeration to say that there are literally zero players we could realistically use in our first team who do not have a representative negotiating on their behalf. And most of them won't want to be discussing contracts etc. They want their agent to do all of that. This means that securing a signature of a player is a far more complex operation as they have a seasoned negotiator ensuring that a.) the contract is as good as it can and b.) any other club that might be interested is also given the opportunity to put an offer/contract on the table.
And this is just one example I can think of, I'm sure there are lots of other ways the game has become more complex that I'm unaware of. The bottom line is there is too much work for a Manager to do in the modern professional era to just have a Brian Clough style character who does everything and only bothers the chairman when he needs some money. Clubs need to break things down into dedicated staff for the playing side and for the commercial side.
