Personally thought Smyth done ok. Me too. Ran their LB absolutely ragged, who ended up getting booked cos of it Think some of the criticism a bit OTT tbh Yes, he's not the greatest. Yes, could work in his delivery a bit But he does have pace. Something we've lacked a lot. And certainly not as bad as some make out. The above stats seem to bear this out. As with other players, we shouldn’t be comparing him to predecessors who he has no chance of becoming but on his own merits and with a full reality check on what we are now.

Armstrong out wide Smyth down middle why not try it. Yes, definitely worth a try.

Wouldn't claim to know the solution, all I do know is we have to try something else - don't know if it is Smith up top, Willock up top, a false 9, even Kohli. Never been that impressed by Kelman but even he has to be an improvement. I have tried to avoid jumping on the anti-Dykes bandwagon but now we are reverting to a possession based style of football but still with only one up top I just don't see how Dykes works. All that said don't have massive confidence that any of these alternatives will work either. Think our season will probably hinge on whether finances/ promises to develop the player can land us a good loan striker in Jan.

If you watch prolonged highlights there are several crosses from our left side but none from the right. What's the point if their left back is ragged when Smyth cannot do anything useful with the ball?

Your`re a bit harsh on Smyth now. He delivered many good crosses until a few matches back.

What's the point if their left back is ragged when Smyth cannot do anything useful with the ball? I'm fully aware of his weaknesses. Just trying to see his good points and suggest he may be more effective centrally. But as you can see he hasn't been in my last two starting elevens: I know he usually goes 4-3-3 but injuries and suspensions might force a change, so I'd go with a 3-4-2-1:
Begovic
Kakay Cook Dunne Cannon SDM Field Paal
Chair Willock
Kelman
Begovic
Cannon Cook JCS* Paal EDB Field Dozzell**
Richards Kelman Willock
*Dunne for JCS (if injured) **Smyth for Dozzell (if suspended)

Not convinced he would be better in a more central role. He had one chance when he received the ball in central scoring sector, but he narrowed the angle too much and shot five meters wide. Typical example of his end product.

Other than his pace, he's also quite skilful. For example does anyone remember that nifty little dummy and turn in the first half that left his marker on the floor?

I thought Armstrong looked lethargic and poor when he came on. Really?? I thought when he came on he showed a good aggressive attitude, running at Bristol City's defenders which could very easily had led to a penalty. He done more in his few mins than Jock done his whole game.

He done more in his few mins than Jock done his whole game. Go back and watch his cameo from 70mins on the offy Jimmy. Before he came on as sub in the 72min he received some quite long detailed written and verbal instructions from Calm, Ward had some brief words and then Marti gave his final instructions. Despite having those pep talks none of them thought that targeting pedestrian Dickie or the already yellow carded LB being a good idea but instead he played predominately down the centre The bad bits in his 20min time on the field are as follows, he failed to even jump for a decent looking Paal corner, failed to connect with Kakay left footed cross, lack of composure made him shank a cross from the right side into the loft from a promising position, left a long clearance from Bergovic for Kelman to make a challenge on,and finally I failed to see him close down ‘any’ oppo players with any real intent in the 20min he was on. His only real impact he had was the the powerful run leading to the 50/50 penalty appeal, I agree it was much more than Donkey achieved in 70mins total game time but I am expectiing so much more from Armstrong.

It's true, that potential penalty run into the box aside, he did nothing. And I too was disappointed by his failure to track back. We must have the worst strike force in the division.

Me and Westy said same when he didn’t close down defenders even though he was fresh. I’m afraid we have two central strikers who don’t know how to play the role. One is 28 and probably beyond hope, the other isn’t a central striker but is only 20, can learn, and hasn’t had long under Cifuentes so may come good.

Typical example of his end product. Not sure anyone is convinced, think its more a case of "surely we have to try something new". I've raised other options in the "False 9" thread. Without in any way wanting to re-start the tired debate about Dykes as a player, having a lone lump up front doesn't seem to suit the new manager's system or play to the team's strengths (such as they are).

Had a very good game for his standards apart from his last 10 mins when he ballsed up a chance for us to win it then fucked up at the other end where we could have lost it but in his defence much better than his usual performance level.
