Of course it was a penalty, he’s entitled to go down as he’s very unlikely to score from that angle. Two stonewall pens imo Sparks. And theirs never was. Was outside the box for one thing. Didn’t get a clear look at the handball incident for our other pen but commentator seemed certain. I tend to agree Stan but did think Smythe challenge looked a little reckless and it’s not the first time he’s done similar this season.

Is VAR coming to the EFL. It's the 6th biggest league in the world

Yes Smyth could / should have stayed on his feet and backed himself BUT was it a pen? It certainly looked one to me. Two different issues, agreed? I always judge a pen on how I would feel if it’s given against us. If that was against us I would be fuming as the player jumps in front of him and he looked on his way down when he made the move across. You obviously would take if it’s given but I personally am not sat here feeling hard done by for that.

Evident tonight that Marti has been working on players - Dozzell, Armstrong, Cannon all looked better. another mini bit of credit to Armstrong that might suggest they have worked with him is I dont think he was offside yesterday unless someone can correct me?

If I’m honest I’ve lost understanding of what is and is not a handball as it seems to change each week depending on the game and the league. It would cause chaos but perhaps they need to tweak laws so in box if it hits hand deliberate or not it’s a pen as then everyone knows what to expect.

Think we need give the Manager some credit for that performance as after such an abject effort on Tuesday against Millwall to turn the performance around to be as competitive as we were against side second and flying is some doing.
That was gritty effort like we saw against Southampton and I would argue if we nicked it yesterday no one could have moaned.

We can’t go on with strikers being surprised when they get a chance or even a half chance. There is no anticipation. Smyth’s chance with the keeper could easily have been a goal, a penalty, a lucky rebound into a scoring chance The keeper did his job but Smyth gave him the opportunity by being half a yard behind instead of right in his face. And there should have been someone burying Cook’s header - that situation is a certain goal when it’s against us.

Thinking about it I reckon Marti got his game management just about right. Dykes in middle is always going to be an odd one but overall they did well and I didn’t get that inevitable feeling in the last 10-15.

Once we weathered that they never looked like scoring to me. Totally transformed from the Millwall game. We made them look like the team at the top, not Ipswich!

We’ve actually performed pretty well against Ipswich twice this season.

The 'handball' was the type of incident that everyone screams for if they're the attacking side but screams against if defending.
They're sometimes given, sometimes not, so it's not a 'clear cut' penalty.
I know we're desperate for a villain here to take this year's Robbie Hart place in what is increasingly looking like a relegation season, but we didn't find him last night despite the efforts Clive Whittingham and his merrymen went to on Twitter last night.

I’m not so sure Marti still does not know his best team or players yet. I agree with your view on Dykes last night, he was no better or worse than Field ,Bonner or Dozzell in MF, I wouldn’t mind see more of Dykes in that role as at least Armstrong or Smyth may get to run onto Dykes headed flicks from route one football occasionally. Disappointing that Bonner looks to have stopped making runs last night to opposition box to support our attacks, but at least shows for the ball in tight areas and has nimble feet. If Chair is injured it could give Kolli a more intelligent role to play instead of him chasing shadows on his own up front, although Bala also appears capable in U21s games.

Keep seeing SDM getting mentioned as an alternative but not seen anything from him to suggest he’s anything but emergency filler material.

I thought Bonner was very good in the first half, couple of lovely give and goes, on one occasion when he was surrounded by three Ipswich players. We were away to the team second in the league am sure his remit was to keep it quite tight. Not saying he is a world beater but from being nowhere near the first team in a couple of months he is probably a starter for me

re the handball, unlike those folks on LFWs (as mentioned above by Oldr) I’m also not one for endlessly analysing refereeing decisions but this one was crucial: can someone more knowledgable than me explain the newest handball rule to me: I have seen a few comments saying it was not intentional which I think is correct, but also irrelevant, surely? I thought (stand to be corrected) that intent is no longer a consideration: if a player has a hand raised and it hits their arm then I thought that under the modern rules is automatically a penalty unless they simply had no chance of being able to move their arm out of the way (like if it is smashed into their arm from a meter away, which wasn’t the case last night)?

Listening to Ipswich manager post match he said his squad was hit with a virus 2 hrs before the match started, which if true puts a slightly different slant to the overall performance.
We were hanging on for most of that second half imo.

"According to Law 12.1 of the IFAB rules, it is a foul if a player deliberately touches the ball with their hand or arm - usually by moving their hand or arm towards the ball. It is also a foul if the contact comes as a result of a player trying to make their body unnaturally bigger. This is a regular point of contention, so to quote the laws: "A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation." It wasn't deliberate so it comes down to the subjective interpretation of the 2nd paragraph and if anyone is arguing that that hand is definitely in a 'unnatural position' when you have 3 players in the mix then maybe they need to have a rethink... What we saw on Twitter last night is the outpouring of grief/anger by those who's personalities are too linked to the fortunes of QPR...

I would argue his body was unnaturally big but as you say subjective - ie is it natural to throw your arm up above your head when you jump? surely that is a very common situation and should be specified either way in the rules? Re people being over-invested yes would agree - some folk even on here can get quite worked up and write stuff about other posters they prob regret the next day. It is tho that curious thing in football as in life - when things are not going for you, nothing seems to…

Fully understand how emotions do run on occasions but it was the usual suspects spouting the usual nonsense to the extent that they even accused the ref of bottling it because of the Ipswich crowd.... you know, that bear pit of football, Portman Road, and that infamous poisonous atmosphere they generate...

I've seen them given. It should've been given. It doesn't matter if there's someone behind you or not. Or that you interfere with a goal scoring opportunity.
Forget VAR. Follow the NFL. Each team has two appeals each half and the referee has then to review his call using a TV replay.
Dykes would've missed anyway.

There is a subjective process allowed if definitely not deliberate so it's all about opinions which is what many LFW types forgot last night. Definitely would prefer 2 appeals over VAR - would even go as far as making it a rule that any appeal made which fails will cost £10,000 at Premier League level and £5k at ours though.
