I'd have him back in a heartbeat. Not the way that MW wants the keeper to play. The worst part of his game by a country mile was his kicking and ball control. Anything which shores up the massive hole in our collective backside would be welcome. No point in having a keeper with good distribution if he has to keep retrieving it from the back of the net. Horse before cart. Not that this is strictly a GK based problem. Its a zilch defensive coaching problem.

Can Smithies play tippy-tappy passes on the deck though.... He saves penalties!

Completely agree Hal. I didn't think Kelly was at fault for either goal last night. Couple of very good saves, very unlucky with his angle on the first (going in off the post pretty much proves that) and had no help at all with the second. Did kick it straight at Ejaria in the first half which would have signed his death warrant with the fans around me...! Problem IMO is keepers being asked to think like midfielders. Same goes for the CB's but then again I'm old skool in that I don't like anyone pissing about in defence.

I like the playing it out from back as it means we retain possession, which is my kind of game. Agree with Warb’s approach ITR. It’s didn’t let us down on Tues at least, and is why he’s opting for Kelly currently. Yes it can play on the nerves at times but I totally get why he does it.

Absolutely HAS to be number 1 transfer target this January.
The more I analyse our goals and GK’s the more it’s glaringly obvious Smithies would be a fantastic addition.
On the bench yet again for Cardiff on Tuesday.
Even a loan would be good IMO.
Kelly must be given a chance at the club in the medium term but as much as it pains me to say it, Lumley needs to be moved on.
Gone from a GK with so much potential to becoming a liability for the side. Fluffed his lines and can’t see a long term future at QPR.

Disappoints me to say but agree with you. At very least when there is better option needs to be told your number 2 from now on

Westy it's sad because the team and most notibaly the GK's are being made to play a certain way but as you know, in this game if you can't cut it you gotta go.
Mistake after mistake at the moment. Doesn't help having such a porous defence in front of them.

Was making mistakes before this style did he not throw one in the goal on his debut two seasons back at Sheff Utd? Is a shame as he decent shot stopper but if you can’t kick, forget about playing out he can’t even keep ball in from dead balls, he’s always going be weak link
Looked fab lower leagues at Bristol but this is different level. Similar to Chair and what we’re seeing was head and shoulders above everyone in league one but not really delivered, thus far, in championship
It’s a bigger jump then I initially realised

Being on the bench in the Premier League will do more for his career than playing regularly in a struggling team in The Championship. Sad, but true. hes not in the premier league he’s in the championship

Lumley had 14 clean sheets last season - the 5th best in the division. Simply struggling as his confidence is rocked at the moment (IMO)
Would help matters if we had a settled back 5 and that Lumley lumped it upfield more often (ie make better and safer decisions).

No for me. Short-termism going back to Smithies. We need to develop and sell our young players and put the money back into producing more.
As mentioned above, 14 clean sheets last season..he didn't just turn into a bad goalkeeper. His confidence is low and he needs help from coaching staff and defence. Stick with him as we are not going up or down anyway. From what I've seen, he has a lot more potential than our other keepers.

If Smithies can't play the ball out from the back then it won't be long before the next candidate is being touted on SM.

Not easy to find a shot stopper, good in the air who can also play out. We defend so poorly that arguably the premium should be on confidence in the box and shot stopping.
The manager is the architect of this mess. He needs to be far more pragmatic. It's apparently beyond him to adopt flexibility. He could be gone before Lumley if he doesn't pull his finger out, loose the dressing room these days and its all over. Warburton isn't stupid which makes it worse.

On QPR+ it often seems like Lumley and Leinstner struggle with the communication between them. Not sure anyone who has attended the matches on a regular basis have noticed this?

Heaton of Villa shows how important a decent goalie is worth to a side. Was superb Monday without doing anything spectacular. Just solid for the whole game

Wedidn't attack last year which is how we managed to keep so many clean sheets. Someone else mentioned the keeper just getting rid. Their 3rd goal came from Lumley (not blaming him for one second) lumping it forward and we lost the header and ended up with a goal.

Not exactly good man management though is it? And certainly not developing a player.

If your not good enough your not good enough regardless what efforts to support or management you have.
We love giving our players an excuse and a way out!!! Possibly part of the reason why we have soft centre

Lumley is as comfortable as a ball playing keeper as Pawel was a RWB under Holloway who take pelters and rightly so. The manager must see that him insisting on this can only have a long term negative impact on the player.
