To emphasise my earlier point, First we had black lives matters Then the world is doomed unless we bankrupt everyone to save it climate crisis. Then came the gay bi I want to be he them she it time. Then Ukraine war become flavour of the need a crisis to throw behind. But no that was soon dropped in favour of all things Islam via a new war in the Middle East. Wonder what the next big one everyone will be out for? China. Another nutter no one will be able to do anything about when he goes for Taiwan.

not familiar with incident but guessing that’s related to what’s happening in Gaza. Not acceptable but not typical either. but you said ‘WE’ are tolerant?? Persuade that to the Jewish guys. With respect Al think you’re living with your hands over your eyes if you think such behaviour is not typical. So border force routinely abuse Jewish people?

Being Jewish since time immemorial has been seen to be not ok by so many. But hey ho . I don’t give a toss about rest of world problems,we should sort our own house out before we look elsewhere. When we all housed and not eating out of food banks. Kids not in poverty, old people not turning into ice over winter, then we can worry about the rest

Institutionally, perhaps it can be argued that England is a Christian country, as the Anglican Church is recognised as the 'religion of the state' and King Charles is still nominally the Head of the Church.
But in the last census, less than half the population identified themselves as Christian.
Is it a 'good thing' that we are/should be a Christian country?
There are so many different flavours and interpretations of Christianity - Christians are split on gay relationships; on the woman's right to choose in terms of contraception and/or giving birth or terminating a pregnancy... in the USA, the KKK profess to be a Christian organisation, but f*ck, that Christian feeling only extends to skin shades up to around Magnolia on the Dulux colour swatch - although Dixieland Redneck and Deep Gammon can be acceptable...

Ok uk, Europe is a western society. But we are having lots of non western influencers moving in and they not used to our life. Yes the church is not such a big deal nowadays but we still have different views on a lot of things.

Er, some on here were saying it was a disgrace it was happening... But it still happens, it is embraced by many and very unlikely to be reciprocated if the shoe was on the other foot so I stand by my comment, WE do. Mate we used to have pub signs saying “no blacks, no Irish, no dogs.” Today where people are allowed to send in “colour blind” cvs, ethnic minorities get called for massively more interviews than when their background is clear. Small example: was at Cheltenham the other week - in our party was a black fella, rest white, every place we were asked for a badge, the rest of us walked thru, his badge examined for ages every time. The English love telling the world how liberal they are but our real behaviour is sometimes nasty, narrow minded and grubby

Much of the religious hardline bigotry is imported. That’s not showing respect for this country is it? The reason, as Lofts post, that Christianity is so watered down is that we are no longer in the Crusades and realism has flourished over the centuries. Religions are nonsense - ok, just my opinion but to kill, maim or even just insult people in the name of religion flies in the face of everything they are supposed to stand for. When migrants are interviewed in Calais they want to come here to earn money for their family. We’re not Great any longer but they know this isn’t such a bad country to come to.

One of the old boys says what the fuck are they doing in here 🙄 we say we want foreigners to embrace our culture and mix! What is more British then the pub but instead ‘what the fuck are they doing in here’ There was a second incident which I stood up and challenged so I’m probably considered woke now by some posters for doing that. Quite sad really ☹️

I think it's both. For example, English law has been influenced by Christian and Judaic values, particularly due to the historical role of Christianity in the UK. Our legal system has evolved over centuries with some aspects reflecting these religious influences. E.g. the moral and ethical values that underpin many laws can be traced back to Judeo-Christian principles. At the same time, modern English law is secular and its principles are also based on legal precedents and enactments, not always directly on religious doctrine. I'd say our present day laws aim to serve a more pluralistic society of multiple faiths and belief systems.

When migrants are interviewed in Calais they want to come here to earn money for their family. We’re not Great any longer but they know this isn’t such a bad country to come to. Not saying we are always bad. We have a proud tradition of welcoming people who have been oppressed elsewhere. That’s actually something that makes me patriotic. But my everyday experience is we are going backwards a little bit when it comes to being generous to “outsiders”, like the example Acton gives. You are right about people wanting to come here but that is mainly because we are richer than most of them. Even that is changing: remember around the millennium all the talk was of Polish plumbers coming over here and taking our jobs. Well now post-Brexit Poland is set to overtake the UK’s standard of living (incredible if you think about it) and lots of Poles are heading home. This country is in trouble - economy becoming the sick man of Europe, no investment, public services crap, much of the north a shithole. We need to start thinking how we turn this round rather than targeting the “enemy within” and being duped into fighting empty culture wars.
