What the fans thought about Safegate last night

Have tried to (partially) defend Southgate as think the problems with England lie a lot deeper than the manager. But fuck me, the stubborn conservative thinking of continuing to try the same thing that clearly isn't working. The match was basically a free hit and he could have experimented. Spain made I think 9 changes for their last match. How he can't see that Foden is not a winger defeats me. Every time he had the ball out wide, he knocked a short pass backwards, with no confidence to take his man on. Football at heart is a simple game - like Marti saying we have ballplayers in our team, so play with the ball - similarly surely you play your best players in their best positions? You could play Foden central. Gordon had a great season, why not play him left wing? Or as suggested above, Sakah as wing back? I don't think the team, man for man, is anything like as good as the hype - just think of how good Sterling was in the last couple of tournaments and we don't have anyone who looks in the same class this time - but am honestly struggling to think of a shot in anger their keeper had to save.

Yes, I agree, it was a frustrating night. He is wedded to his core players no matter how out of form they are. His substitutions were way too late, especially Gordon. What did he learn from those 5 minutes? Bellingham needed a rest, Foden could have switched to the centre. Kane could have come off. It was crying out for players to run at them, as Palmer demonstrated. It is as if he was concerned that if he had fielded the back-up players and they won well, it would ruin his thinking for the next game. Sako at wing back is a decent call, although he was not prepared to go past defenders, I don't think he looks fully fit. But we have had so much luck in this tournament. To finish top of our group, considering how we have played is astonishing. But Southgate's major failing for me is that he does not know how to break down teams who set up to rigidly defend, and if we do get in front, he then allows us to sit back. No matter what happens on Sunday, he will no doubt get his knighthood.....

Even Palmer on was way too late at 70mins. Should have at least come on at 60 mins. And yes, Gordon on at 85mins was comical

Any manager worth his salt would have rested Kane, Bellingham, Saka, all of whom looked leggy, or at least only played them if we were struggling second half. This was Slovenia FFS, not Spain, and a golden opportunity to try out Gordon from the start, along with Watkins first half, then bring on Palmer second half. Also could have rested Walker and let TAA play there. Or swap him for the depressing Trippier, whose limited ability in that role really holds us back.
But no, risk-averse Safegate burns out Bellingham in a game where we're already safe, fails to make ANY tactical changes to the previous two abject performances and takes us into the second round in low spirits and disarray. Ugh, I can't stand the rabbit faced twat.

only reason i can think of as to why we've played so poorly in the groups is we're working on a system that will favour us in the knockouts when we face better sides.
dunno if there's any logic to it, yes the top sides will come at us way more than slovenia did but we were also under the cosh against denmark and serbia.
really worrying eitherway. god knows why he didn't mix it up a bit against slovenia as what message does that send to the backup players? they're no doubt chomping at the bit to get their chances but it's all for nought, doesn't matter how well they do in their cameos as gareth will always pick the same people.

None of this is a surprise. Never understood the appointment, not up to speed, would never want him at LR. We all know he should have been sacked after the spineless, clueless disaster vs a bunch of old men (ie Italy).
However. The back line looks pretty good to me (although LHS needs sorting). We could have won all our games comfortably and we'd be no better off tournament wise. And there is a sytsem he could play around Bellingham 8, Palmer 10. And when he'd finally his finger out of his arse and belatedly got some attacking options on the park, we looked decent imo.
But I don't think any of the 'management team' look remotely capable, so its all down to chance. btw who's the fat fuck in the tracksuit?

So, England v Slovakia on Sunday.
If we win, we'll play either Switzerland or Italy in the quarters the following Saturday, 6th July.
If we win that one, we'll play one of: Austria, Romania, Turkey or the Netherlands on Wednesday 10 July.
FFS, we couldn't get an 'easier' path to the final - they'd better get their shit together...

Anyone in the squad from City, Liverpool or Arsenal is used to playing a totally different type of football based around a high line. Real Madrid vary it but often play high.
Southgate has never set up that way. TBH defensively, we look very solid, plus they're sat deep so they are less vulnerable to quick counters.
Because almost none of the squad play that way at home just turning up and turning it on is pretty much impossible.
This, I think, is at the heart of the problem. England could still go all the way winning ugly, lovely draw and it's knock out football, but if we are going to do that the transitions need to speed up. A lot.
I think it was massively naive to think that just because we've got a great set of AMFs / forwards we were suddenly going to be exciting.

So looks like team will be:
Pickford Walker, Guehi, Stones, Trippier Rice, Mainoo Saka, Jude, Foden Kane
I was initially annoyed as think that Walker should go left back and Palmer deserves to start but other than Trippier at left back, it’s pretty much got players in right positions,

And also think if Jude isn’t dropping back, then Mainoo is probably best placed to partner Rice.
