France starting well against Holland. Holland denied a definite goal by English VAR wankers. Yes, that was ridiculous. No way would he have saved that, whether dumfries was there or not. France 'lucky' with refs again, like in the Austria game, where they got all the decisions.

Yes, was watching with loads of Dutch. I said would be disallowed as you can’t be standing next to keeper and not be distracting him even though he was never saving it. Just get back to offside is offside - no debate.

Why are Ukraine above Slovakia with a worse goal difference?

Why are Ukraine above Slovakia with a worse goal difference? Well spotted Ginge. It doesn't make sense. Political bias??? Weird. Sure, Ukraine beat Slovakia, but so what? Still got same points, but worse goal difference.

IRC they changed it so head to head is more important in the group stages.

Interesting take from a Dutch defender:
Personally I think the defender probably did stop the keeper from making a full-stretch dive. He may have been unlikely to save it, but even if there was only a tiny chance that he would, then surely the defender's offside position would be impeding that attempt.

I watched them review it from multiple angles last night. No way was the keeper's view blocked, nor was he impeded, by the Dutch player. It was a goal. Ijnteresting how the French keep on benefitting from these decisions, just like v Austria, when a blatant corner wasn't given and then they went on to score from the ensuing phase of play.

This would be why
How are teams ranked in the group stage?
In the UEFA EURO 2024 group stage, teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Once all matches are completed, rankings are decided based on the following criteria:
Points obtained in head-to-head matches between tied teams. Superior goal difference in head-to-head matches. Number of goals scored in head-to-head matches. Superior goal difference in all group matches. Number of goals scored in all group matches. Penalty shoot-out if teams are tied after playing each other in the final group match. Lowest disciplinary points total. Higher position in the European Qualifiers ranking.

As Ukraine beat Slovakia 2-1, so in a live table Slovakia are below Ukraine.

Agree he didn't impede the keeper's view, but think we'll have to agree to disagree that he didn't impede the keeper to some extent...

I won't. Keeper had no chance to dive.

I won't. Keeper had no chance to dive. I've seen all the angles. What the 'expert' commentators and analysts didn't say was that Dutch was occupying the keepers entire peripheral vision on his LHS. That is a massive distraction - its similar in cricket when slips are too close and between them they fuck up an easy chance. It's irrelevant that it would have gone in anyway: the guy was interfering with play because he was too close the keeper. He knew exactly what he was doing. For me there are way more controversial offsides given on a weekly basis. On England. I've been saying on here and elsewhere for years that Gareth was way out of his depth - nice guy, but psychologically and tactically hugely compromised. We go a goal up and then play like Scotland on a bad day, our pressing game is chaotic or non existent, and our ball way too slow, way too often. The manager appears not to have learned anything at all from last time round. The other thing we're not doing is movement, eg if Foden starts at 11 he should be able to come inside and look for work, we should be mixing it up off the ball way way more, dragging defenders around. It's also incredible to me that the guy with arguably the best no. 10 stats in Europe hasn't seen a single minute of play. I'd play Jude deeper at 8 and Cole Palmer ahead at 10. Everyone else should be playing in positions where they would start for their clubs, or not playing at all.

I won't. Keeper had no chance to dive. Keeper had no chance full stop but they’ve made it so that offside is open to different interpretation by different people and different situations instead of having a clear law like it used to be.

People used to moan about old Rule too Al when goals chalked off for player not even being in the box but by laws in offside position.
Perhaps it’s easier to just take position of if anyone is off it’s off but the arguments will just be reversed. Not sure there is a perfect solution.

I'd do two things. 1) you are only off if there is clear daylight between you and the defender. None of this big toe / little finger in front nonsense. 2) anyone, anywhere in an offside position should be deemed to be offside, irrespective of whether or not they are interfering with play. Clear and simple.

Imo, the dutch defender denied the French goalie the chance to make a theorictial save. That`s why the VAR made the right decision. However, just a pity that Holland ended up with only a draw and one of the best, perhaps the best player on the pitch ended up with a Zero on the goal sheet. Perhaps a bit on a side note, but because the refs seem to hate us I would think QPR would benefit from having a VAR system in place in our division. I don't know.

It was offside ‘unless not interfering with play’. That was the only decision to make. Standing by the keeper is clearly interfering with play. I suppose you could say that decision was like the old law.

Surely current law better then that.

Brian Moore on Big Match made classic stupid remark ‘if they’re not interfering with play, what are they doing on the pitch?’ Given the ball can travel the length of the pitch in seconds that was a pretty daft thing to say.
