The slow motion riot of gambling addiction has left it's stain on my family via my eldest. To me, it's the Kraken of all addictions.
Amazingly, given my addictive peronality, it never left it's carcinogenic taint on me. We made it to the other side in one piece with my boy, others aren't so fortunate.
People talk about the parameters of personal responsibility and the force of Will but we're not all made the same, from the moment we kick and scream sucking in our first breath we have different DNA percolating in us all from the floorboards up.
Lifes Addictions meld to the individual vunerabilities like Japanese knot weed.
I'd rather we didn't advertise with gambling firms, just as if it were companies that manufactured Yayo, skunk , White burgers, khat alkoloids and shamanic tree bark hallucinogens.
Just my opnion, can fully understand those that see it differently.

Yeah, some of that documentary last night was hard to watch. Not sure I can get behind limiting people's freedom to gamble or a betting companies freedom to advertise though.
I really feel strongly that people should have the right to do whatever they want with their lives, even if it may ultimately have a negative impact on their existence.
Merson is at an absolute extreme end of the spectrum and I can't imagine there are many people who have as an extreme addiction as him. It's a terrible thing, but I don't believe in limiting the freedoms of everyone to protect a very small section of society. If we start going down that route, where does it stop?

To what degree do you want a nanny state? How much power do you want to hand over to your government, who are essentially all our civil servants there to serve us through our taxes. By banning football clubs from using gambling companies as sponsors or for advertising that would have to mean yet further government legislation. As DiscoDroid says, we're all individuals with our unique DNA and backstory. Therefore everyone will draw the line above at varying points in the sand. So ultimately it becomes political with one extreme being communism where all your powers and freedoms are handed over to the state; with the other being a small and limited government with everything being left to a purely free market economy. Everyone of us falls at some point along this spectrum and ultimately there is no 'right' or 'wrong' because we all have our unique moral and ethical code (one man's right is another man's wrong or somewhere inbetween). But apparently we all get to decide who's in charge every four years at the ballot box in these so-called democracies. And genuinely democratic societies end up with the politicians they deserve.

And genuinely democratic societies end up with the politicians they deserve. Can’t argue with that but it is hard to accept any of us deserve the bunch of inept, lying bastards we now have. I’m a lifelong Tory but I’d happily see Cameron strung up for what he set in motion and I’d never vote for anyone associated with Johnson. The last people I want nannying me thanks.

Punting is part of society and yes it is double dangerous if it grips you but like everything else it should be down to the individual to manage it. Betting apps has no doubt made it worse as you now have 24/7 opportunities to gamble on everything. Give me a pen and coupon anytime over an online app.

I agree in general but to hear some of those stories of people topping up their accounts five times a day was truly shocking. And for them to be targeted by the Gambling Companies just doesn't sit well with me at all.

I do agree to some extent mate. But all online companies use data analytics to target their highest profit customers. It all comes down to whether you feel it's a company's responsibility to protect vulnerable customers, or an individuals responsibility to control his or her own actions.
Some better regulation is probably needed, but gambling companies will always cater to people with a compulsion for gambling. Just as alcohol companies will try to appeal to alcoholics, online retail to shopaholics, fast food companies to compulsive eaters, etc.
I mean where do you draw the line if you start going down this rabbit hole?
