Yep it's madness, you have to laugh else you'd cry.
A key part of having the DoF role is to create an identity for the club in it's style so you don't constantly change with the managers and end up with a dollys mixture of players from various regimes who the new manager doesn't want (Brentford & Brighton prime examples of how this should work). Somehow we started building an 'identity' per se, and in appointing GA have totally thrown that 3 years' worth in the bin & are going in a totally different direction. Absolute shambles.

When Warburton answered questions about the primary role of a DOF it was my impression that some of his answers were a side swipe at Ferdinand. this tweet is key as I recall fans at the time trying to suggest that Warburton and Austin had fallen out.

I listened to the full podcast. MW is asked "What is the role/job of a DoF?" MW's reply was, to paraphrase: "In my view, one of its prime roles is to act as a minder / protector between the head coach and the board."
Well, that clearly never happened at QPR did it lol!

The DOF idea is flawed at our level - DOF brings in shit players and it’s the manager’s fault when it doesn’t work? That can’t be right. If you want to build an identity build a decent side first then the identity will flow. Success breeds success - until you sell all the decent players again.

If you want to build an identity build a decent side first then the identity will flow. Success breeds success - until you sell all the decent players again. We will never agree on this Alan but I think you are basing this on the experience of having Les as our DoF. A real DoF would bring in players based on analytics, not because the manager used to work with them. If players have insanely good analytics and fit into a certain style and have been well scouted, then it is up to the head coach to make it work. If you are a stable club that keeps a manager for a decade then I could understand your argument but when you have three managers a season your way of doing it leads to managers bringing in their pet favourites, cliques, players downing tools, and eventually bankruptcy. Assuming GA brings in a load of free cloggers from Wycombe and the like, how many realistically do you think will still be picked by the next manager when Gareth is inevitably sacked by Christmas?

But the idea that managers don’t bring in their own is nonsense. DOF or no DOF. If a squad is crap a new guy will want to improve it not work miracles with what has failed already.

That’s how the system works if it’s implemented effectively. As stains says we have not implemented it effectively it’s been half arsed.

Clubs like a ring road, no direction and going round and round. Board need to sit down with the staff. And sought out a single plan for whole club. Style , ambition, recruitment the works and just bloody work to it 100% No flip flopping.

My prime time captain is Hammers season ticket holder and was watching final live in Prague. Told me the win was his best ever Hammers experience. Must be the Warburton effect.

He was not well liked by most of the players / staff. This is a fact. Lets not forget West Ham have had a terrible season. Has he brought any value to them at all? I can't personally see what he's added.

Moyes' 1097 game wait for a major trophy has come to an end. Warburton was the missing piece. And I bet most West Ham fans prefer this season to any previous in about 50 years.

True, but we weren't exactly a model of success when Warbs took over. We had finished 19th in the table I believe with one win in 15 games under McClaren. Big fan of Marti's but Warbs an under-appreciated manager for us and if there was a power-struggle between him, Les and Ramsay they should have backed Warbs IMHO. Les and Ramsay were sacked way too late as their failings were all too obvious before things turned sour with Warbs.

But was it the doomed disaster-zone Marti walked into mid-way through a season, Stains?
Warbs arrived in the summer close season
