agree but the youngster surely has to be ready to contribute and add value? (Not directed at muscles talking about youngsters overall) Sure, so let’s find out. Play them. No good? Get rid. this is where we will differ then as imo you’re either ready to play in the first team or you're not. I personally don’t think at this level you can say you can have a go today see how you get on and if you’re ready or not! it’s not the development team it’s the first team. Being in the first team should come with element of expectation. We clearly have different views on expectations of what gets you in the first team as a kid. I can see someone getting in who is ready + has potential to grow but not someone who simply has potential. Rooney was ready, Owen was ready, Milner was Ready, Bellingham was ready all for first team football and they made an impact and contributed to the outcome of games. We’re going off topic now and this possibly sits better in the Youth Team thread. Interesting subject by the way.

Ok, to get back on topic when I was saying give Armstrong a chance it was because Donkey had no competition and a kid coming in might have shaken him up a bit. I had no idea whether Armstrong was real deal or not. We had no one else.

No coincidence that our longest player threads are Dykes and Armstrong. They must have something in common.

Strike/Bill, What would you deem success for Armstrong over the remainder of this season and over the next 2? Hopefully we will find out,new coach, correct position,a bit of confidence, arm round him etc. I will refuse to criticise him until he has had a good chance in a team that is together and performing well. Players like Rooney Owen come along once in a blue moon so the comparison is unfair in the extreme

Of all the posts made today I think Croydoncaptainjack has described in detail how Armstrong has demonstrated that his game is certainly improving. The only sticking point for some is refusing to acknowledge it and using Donkey as an example of being a better alternative OldR.

There are moments when comparisons have been natural within this thread and other occasions when the debate has been shoehorned in... this was obviously the latter. I get it some people hate Lydon Dykes but the way they go on you'd think they caught him in bed with their wife and he made them film it and wipe him off afterwards...

One of the very few times Sinclair has been seen to head the ball.

How we miss a player like Iregbunam, who could pass forward for someone like Armstrong to run onto.

Think Chair could and should do this but often dwells on the ball to long and often no end product.

It's the 'midfield maestro' role where we're really lacking, someone who pulls the strings. I think Dozzell is meant to be that man, but he rarely delivers. When Johansen still had legs he was bloody good at it too.

22 against 11 will always create chances. No wonder he scored.

Just a lump it appears. Blows out too quickly and has a shocking touch. Think this proves he is way way off this level of football as it stands. From February and unfortunately doesn't appear to have improved very much despite his limited appearances.

My opinion of him hasn't changed once since the first time I saw him kick a ball. Needs at least a full season out on loan somewhere he'll play every week!

Was evidently clear at Sheff his all round football intelligence really isnt there. Just his body position when it comes to him receiving the ball with his back to goal holding off a defender etc, really poor. He is a bit of a 1 trick pony in wanting to simply get in behind in a foot race (which is great as 9 times out of 10 he will win it!) - but even then he doesnt have any end product with it as he is so unthreatening when he gets to shooting.
So frustrating as with his natural attributes, he could be a right handful. Not sure you can teach that finishing instinct too much though (obviously you can work on it), but you either have that in you or don't. Agree with Tarbs above, I reckon him getting a year out on loan playing week in week out (even abroad tbh rather than the rough & tumble of lower English leagues) could do him wonders.
Feel for him a bit as there is enhanced pressur eon him from us due to our only other striker being dog shit.
