Have to say, I miss a lot of old, 'proper' football.
When contact was allowed, players didn't roll around faking injury - you got crocked, exchanged a few 'pleasantries' and just got on with it.
And a lack of under soil heating and synthetic weave turf meant winter football was very entertaining!

I’d have loved to see some of the players I’ve had privilege to watch play on modern pitches.

the cheating has reached epidemic levels Only good use of VAR would be to punish diving and cheating players with a red card.

Might have spotted a potential yellow card offence in that lot...

Mad when you look back at old photos. Players like Bobby Charlton who looked like school headmasters. Just don't see the likes of it now, ever.

Have amassed a ridiculously huge sized collection of old matches on DVD/MP4 and only watch football from this collection now.
What they call football now is a completely different sport and one I find myself with no interest in.
Haven't watched a live match on TV for 2 seasons and won't do again.

In 40/50 years time will the young fans of today be making the identical lament, saying today's game is unrecognisable from when I were a lad/lass?
Everything in life changes, nothing stays the same, and football is no exception. It's the law of nature.
Now, are things progressing or regressing is a different question....

Definitely an old git's statement, no doubt about that 👍

If Psycho had just got the slightest nick on the ball, probably wouldn't even have been a foul in them days...

So what and when did the change first surface ? Event ? Rule change ? Referees ? What you guys and girls think. Back in the day, if a player made contact with the ball before following through and clattering seven shades of shit out of their opponent, it was deemed 'fair play'. More recently (not sure when the rule changed), other criteria are involved. Fouls will be given for careless, reckless or use of excessive force, regardless of whether the ball is played first before contact with an opposing player.: Careless - if a player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or acts without precaution. Verbal warning. Reckless - if a player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent and must be cautioned by use of a yellow card. Excessive force - if a player exceeds the necessary use of force and endangers the safety of an opponent he must be sent off.

FIFA made a lot of changes as football had a reputation for being a tough man's almost thuggish sort of sport especially in the era of hooliganism. they wanted the game to be faster paced and so lots of tweakings of the rules were made, a famous one as dk would know of very well is the pass back rule. tbh i think there needs to be a fairer middle ground, football is a contact sport with hundreds of different types of playstyles.

So what and when did the change first surface ? Event ? Rule change ? Referees ? What you guys and girls think. A number of reasons. Sky taking the game over, middle class twats 'discovering' the sport and the cultural genocide that followed... Corrupt organisations. It is a non contact sport now VAR Teams with squads from anywhere rather than somewhere: The fact that we could in recent seasons have fielded a complete non-English and/or non-white side is something we should be ashamed of, not proud. Modern 'fans' cosplaying football fans The fact that every match has to be hyped to be a big occasion Podcasts and blogs by middle class twats for middle class twats The loan market The way people now see the football club they support/'support' as an extension of their personality and give it far too great an importance The forced/choreography of modern fan groups INCLUDING the Loft Boys or whatever they're called Ticket prices Saturation of tv coverage I could honestly go on...

A lot more athleticism in football now and skill throughout a team (even a goalie meant to be comfortable on the ball now). I can get as nostalgic as the next fan - particularly as the 1970s was our glory era - but on the whole football way better now in most respects. Money and the arrogance/ unfairness it produces would be the main negative for me.

I watch, as I have said, a lot of historic matches and have recently watched a lot of Italia 90. One of the most striking things is that although there are some comments about teams who back pass often - Egypt especially- not a single commentator argues that it should be outlawed and neither did the World Soccer post tournament review.... This version of history that expresses that there was outright demand to ban it is revisionism at worse and pure myth at best.
