what a difference half a season and a new philosophy makes. under gaz we were completely awful, we knew 9 of the starting 11 simply because we had no other options in the squad despite the dire football and results.
marti has completely turned that on its head. we have options in every position, whether it's a more solid RB in dunne or an attack minded fullback in hevertton there is the potential to mix things up game by game. even our options off the bench can change it up, i know smyth doesn't have his fans but his work rate, pace and ability to win set pieces will be crucial at times throughout the next season.
AND FINALLY, WE HAVE A GOALSCORER. when was the last time we could say that? wells maybe?
it's a new look side that incorporates the spine of the team. there's a great vibe around the club and with one or two new signings i see no reason why we shouldn't be challenging for the top 6. great times ahead!

squad numbers released. no number 7 which bodes well for a future signing.

Surprised Hawkins isn’t included in the young players given a number, thought he was looking quite good a year ago. Does look a bit thin defensively.

Imo, it`s strange that Hawkins doesn't even have a squad number this season.

Unless i’ve missed it there hasn’t been much chat on here about squad numbers.
Jimmy number 3 so presumably he first choice right back
Paal not number 2 so a v public way of saying to him “if you won’t sign a contract don’t assume you will be first choice”
No number 7 - given it’s an iconic number - so surely they expect to bring someone in for this role?
No 14 - wasn’t that Hayden’s number?

In so far as you can tell from a highlights reel Koki Saito looks really exciting. One question: he clearly plays on the left so how do we line up our Dembele, Chair and him? Saito is an inverted left winger who can also play central Dembele looks more of a CAM (10) who can also play on the right Chair usually central or on the left. Can't see all three playing together though. Still wouldn't rule out Chair being sold too.

But in his interview naming Cook capt he said either Field or Chair to deputise so doesn’t sound as if he is going anywhere? Something doesn’t quite add up but not sure what…

This is also assuming both players will sign, which we should not.

Often thought Andersen cramped Willock as was played in the position Willock operated best in. Take your point though. It's premature however to assume BOTH these players will be signing

It's premature however to assume BOTH these players will be signing Marti seems to like two holding, three attacking midfielders (one left, one centre, one right) behind the lone striker. That might have been down to the paucity of striker options but it seems more the modern way and Martii is nothing if not a modern coach. Anyway will be very interesting to see how we line up this season and it’s still a bit of a mystery.

i imagine chair will have the left side nailed down as his but i can see the 3 behind celar interchanging across the AM. i doubt it will be a rigid system tbh.

Chair more central, we’ve been crying out for it and that lets it happen. If chairs out dembele can play central and smyth on the right. If the Japanese guy is out chair can go left. Options.

Saito more of a left winger than Chair, so if they both sign then something like this. Very short attacking three mind:
Nardi
Dunne Cook JCS Paal
Field Varane
Chair Dembele Saito
Celar

CelarJust can’t see Chair being played out right personally as in thiat diagram. Dembele right and chair central is possible

CelarThat's exactly as I see it. Maybe switch Chair with Dembele.

CelarLooks like a good line-up and would leave us with a very strong bench as well. All seems to be quiet for the moment on Paal and JCS transfer rumours. I would not be surprised. to see one or both to go later in the window but the squad we are building maybe they can be convinced to stay - if we can afford to turn down bids. If Hayden is on the train down to us I can only assume something is moving onto Eze front.

Chair will be the 10 with 2no new wingers Stan You wait and see bro 💪 You could well be right Gens In my team above Dembele and Chair's positions could easily be swapped. As Corbs says, the front three can be very fluid and we know that's how Marti likes to play. No doubt even he won't know his best line-up as his squad isn't even complete yet!

We haven't fielded an attacking midfield like that for years. That still doesn't leave us with a genuine, two footed 10. (Sorry everyone. Couldn't let two whole days pass without pandering to my obsession.)
