Up until the weekend I was still dreaming about a playmaker and a FB to deliver us from Paal.
But then I saw Varane and JC up to his old tricks..... cue change of priorities

In terms of playmaker my definition is a player that runs the midfield, has energy, can spot a pass, tackle and organise. Imo dont think Saito and Dembele fit that requirement.

Too early to tell Bill imo, particularly re Dembele. Saw some good signs of it on Saturday, especially when he played centrally.

If you had the choice of one more signing and that’s it I think I would get Hayden.

22 year old Varane played 39 games for Sporting Gijon, a Spanish second division side. Not sure if that is a Championship comparison, but I doubt it.
Dembele, 21, and Seito, 23, seem much further developed.I reckon we took a punt and need to cross our fingers.

Think we (and maybe the club?) hoped we were buying a player ready for the first team - because the transfer fee for a club like us was significant - but perhaps he is more one for the future. Early days of course, but the fact we are now being linked with a Belgium midfielder would suggest the club also see that holding midfield position as a weakness.

Nardi Dunne JCS Cook Paal Field/Varane Madsen Dembele Chair Saito Celar/Frey/Dykes

think a loan for EDB is now ideal as others have said. handy player but really needs regular game time. think he's good enough for an upper midtable league 1 club tbh if not better than that and hopefully he can come back a more complete player or failing that someone we can get a decent fee for.

So what is our match day squad with everyone available? Very early days and we don't know how some of these players will settle but on paper at least my provisional team is below (I have shown Field and Marsden alongside each other but assume Field plays the anchor "6" role and Marsden plays as an "8", turning and linking to our three numbers "10s"/ wingers.
Nardi
Dunne Cook JCS Paal
Field Marsden
Dembele Chair Saito
Celar
Subs (believe you are allowed to field 5 of 9):
Dykes
Frey
Andersen
Varane
Coleback
Morrison
Fox
Santos
Solomon
To me what shows the most progress is the bench.
That means no place for the likes of EDB, Kohli, Lloyd and the misfiring Cannon. First three of those heading out on loan?

It’s greedy but proper RB still needed I think we are pretty weak at full back in general mate. It's not that we don't have numbers there, I just don't like the look of the quality of our options.

Oops, forgot him. But tbh he doesn't get in the team. I guess you want him on the bench but who do you leave out? Assumes of course no out-going - eg Dykes been linked with a few loans.

But that analytics article I posted on Marsden showed that tackling isn’t his strong point to put it politely. We saw how attackers just breezed past Varane (v early days obvs). Just think in the Champ you have to compromise a bit on style; you need steel too

Varane probably more in that mould than Marsden. OTOH it could end up with Varane and Marsden as first choice with Field and Colback as backup...

At this stage I would not name a starting 11. We are building up to having 2 players per position if we use a couple who can play in more than one.
I would think we will see a fair amount of rotation depending on opponents, home or away, formation, injuries and suspensions and loss of form. I also expect will see quick fire subs if and when needed.
The positive is that we can actually have this sort of debate because we now have choices and cover. We need to let the overseas imports have some time to settle both into Championship style football but also when you are up rooting home and family and changing countries at the same time it takes a bit of time to settle (I know from experience). So I think it will be 3 months before we are firing on all cylinders but expect we will be well placed by then anyway and can then kick on.
