At this stage I would not name a starting 11. We are building up to having 2 players per position if we use a couple who can play in more than one. I would think we will see a fair amount of rotation depending on opponents, home or away, formation, injuries and suspensions and loss of form. I also expect will see quick fire subs if and when needed. The positive is that we can actually have this sort of debate because we now have choices and cover. We need to let the overseas imports have some time to settle both into Championship style football but also when you are up rooting home and family and changing countries at the same time it takes a bit of time to settle (I know from experience). So I think it will be 3 months before we are firing on all cylinders but expect we will be well placed by then anyway and can then kick on. Back 5 picks itself IMHO. Can’t see any of Chair, Dembele or Saito being left out bar a major drop in form. Masden hasn’t been bought to play in reserves. Realistically the three strikers are fighting for one place and Field, Coleback and Varane for the other available space. Of course that is just the way it looks right now and agree a lot can change in football very quickly

The other point I forgot to mention re rotation is the fixture overloads especially if the unbelievable happens and we have a cup run. Cook may need to sit out a few and Colback will definitely be sitting a few out playing cards.

No way Chair will be benched he is our best player Looks like Dembele could be challenging him to that crown. Much more two-footed, thus much harder to defend against. Looks better on set pieces too (delivery for both goals were perfect). Very impressive first two performances, our best player in both games.

The point of getting better as a team is having more than one good player. A Plymouth journo quipped pre match that Chair’s back injury was probably caused by carrying the team for two years. Certainly want Dembele to start every game but it would be perverse to leave out Chair for Smyth for example.

Very strange one - if true. How to demotivate one of your most passionate players who did really well in that position last season. But not jumping to any conclusions, might be bollocks, or might be a bigger transfer jigsaw puzzle behind the scenes than we are aware of. I like Dunne, but he's no right back and will get found out against sides with decent wingers, which there are plenty of in this division. Makes more sense to me to have a specialist right back who's up to the job (and I'm not sure we have one at present), and have Dunne compete for the 2 centre half positions.

How to demotivate one of your most passionate players who did really well in that position last season. Or conversely, how to motivate them by adding competition for places? Santos and Dunne would be the two places competing for one position policy, currently So if JCS is being lined up for a sale that would push Dunne back to CB With Fox and Paal for competing for LB

As you say a strange one not only because of Dunn but also Santos. Having said that while Dunn did a decent job at right back I do not think that is his natural position and has been exposed when attacked by good wingers. It could simply be to improve the squad with a true experienced RB- maybe a bit hard on Dunn but if th aim is to keep improving the squad it's a hard life. It also could be part of a bigger picture - if someone comes in for JCS or Paal having Dunn and Fox as cover would save some last minute panic and money. Then of course it could be total clickbait. One thing the club will have to watch with our overseas signings is the need to name a minimum 7 "home grown" players in the match day squad.

I think we have fairly decent cover even if JCS is off, with Liam Morrison also in the squad. I think there are just question marks over our quality at right back. I'm not sure either of Santos or Cannon are currently up to the job of being first choice.

You are right he did get found out against top quality wingers a few times. Against that, before he was moved into that position, every time we conceded a corner or a free kick it felt like conceding a penalty. He gave us real arial strength at set pieces that was invaluable. We have already lost Hayden who was great in the air. One of the things analytics showed about Marsden was despite being a giant he has barely won a header in his life. Man City have done very well by effectively having four centre halves. So obviously I get the appeal of having a tricky wing back who can bomb forward but then you lose some of Dunne's attributes. For me as a centre back Dunne has always had an error in him, but as a right back he was one of our most improved players last season IMHO and a big reason for our survival. I also don't get the point of Santos if we are bringing in yet another right back?

Wonder if we will get another striker in
Now Dykes is going leaves us very thin
Or Hayden to guarantee mid table to top 10

Be interested to see who we loan out.
Lloyd seems to have overtaken Kohli which is quite surprising if the you think back to the Spurs friendly, but fair play to him he looks to impact the game. And unlike Smyth there are a few signs there might actually be an end product there (very early days).
Its a tough one as we finally have some youngsters pushing for first team action. But they need games.
Am in a minority but I still like EDB - he is at the age that he needs 30 games minimum this season.
Both him and Kohli would surely get interest from some decent clubs?

I get the positives about Varane and want him to succeed. My concern is that second half of last season Marti was very pragmatic and packed the midfield with tough tacklers that made us hard to break down. This season we have gone very purist trying to play like a Spanish team. I really hope it works. Certainly it makes us more threatening, but here's the rub: it also makes us more vulnerable. Just being honest my fear is the likes of Varane and Masden are technical players who might struggle with the Championship's physicality. Varane has re-sale potential and Hayden doesn't but in terms of this season to date we have really missed Hayden's strength and experience. How many teams have just sliced through our midfield already this season almost at will, and had 1-on-1s with the keeper or forcing a last ditch tackle? Way up on last season would be my guess. So not digging out any individual player but just hope the balance of the team hasn't been changed too radically, too quickly. It puts a hell of a lot of responsibility on Field, Colback and JCS to clear up the mess.

Its a fair point but its just a bit too Gigi Di Canio for me (entertaining as his team certainly was). Personally I would have gone somewhere in the middle, ala Warnock. You have your Derrys and Hills - in our case Field and Hayden - as well as your Adels and Routledges - in our case Dembele and Chair. Far too big a change IMHO but obvs hope I'm wrong.

I get the positives about him etc Great post
Basically a question of finding the right balance, the right combination of enforcement and creativity. Sorting out your off the ball cover takes time with a brand new crew. We're not going to tear up any trees this year, you're right, but we will progress.
If - crudely speaking - the aim is to play like Spain (!) I'm happy that the Spain we're talking about is the current model, not the tikki taka of 20 years ago but something faster and more penetrative. However, in order to do that the first base is still getting them comfortable on the ball.
Finally I thought EDB did Ok last night, I think a few people were a bit quick to write him off.

Agree with all of this. Be fascinating to see in practical terms what this translates into. The purist would say play Varane and Masden. As others have said, it would be entertaining and we would score goals. But as you say we need balance. Colback would be the answer other things being equal but his recklessness frightens the life out of me. His clumsy tackle last night would have conceded a penalty if it was half a foot further on. The way he shakes his head in disbelief when he is inevitably hauled up for a blatant foul is baffling given his experience. So in short (apologies for ramble) that position alongside Field is a concern for me.

I still think all three Kolli, Lloyd and Dixon-Bonner need to be loaned out so that they would have a possibility to start every game in league two. Make loan deals until end of year and evaluate the situation then. None of them are ready to start games in the Championship.

But in going for Varane and Masden we are really setting our stall out as a passing side. If you are the best at what you do then think we would all agree that is the way to play. The question is if you are a mid or lower level Championship club is that going to leave you vulnerable? That's my concern, just being honest, hoping very much someone will shove this down my throat after we play Luton off the park and canter to a 3-0 win.

one thing i have noticed and am not a big fan of is we always pass to field when passing it out from the back. like, he's the first CM to receive the pass from nardi or a defender and then it's his job to pick the next pass after that. that worries me tbh as while i really rate field as a player to break up play and add steel to the midfield i don't rate his ability on the ball. he's not comfortable dribbling or picking out passes so why is he the CM dropping deep to receive that first pass? it'll cost us at some stage as teams know to press field.
it should be varane or ideally madsen dropping deeper to pick up the pass.

Isn't this where our DMs come in, Field and Colback? Thought Colback had a decent game last night. Realise he lacks pace and has discipline issues, but does provide experience and still has useful attributes. Varane should fulfil this role too once he gets up to speed with Championship football.

Kolli is well above league two standard so pointless sending him down the ladder. I think he's progressing nicely from the bench. Dixon Bonner needs to stay as cover. He was pretty good last night against a side that everyone including their supporters rated as a strong line up. Lloyd is the tough call. He has pace but can fade out of a game. What you do with him depends entirely on how much cover you have for that position.
