First 20 minutes Tuesday, saw signs of the player we're supposed to have signed.
Two goals from midfield too (so far), including one unstoppable penalty.
I remain optimistic about him.

He seems to be slowly adjusting to the championship. Marti for his part, is figuring out how best to play him.

He's def a good player, just finding his feet. I actually don't think he has been as bad in some games as a lot on here myself anyway.

Like the entire team, he lacks urgency. We don't speed it up. And we need to.

If we had pace up front with his ability ping it we would be getting behind teams all the time.

He’s played 3 games. Give him time for goodness sake. He’s done some good stuff and some poor stuff. That’s why we need patience

We also need points. We have to be careful with patience. So you’d rather we’d signed people like Hayden? So we get tried and tested championship players who are older? Yes we’d have more points now but where does that leave us at the end of the season? We’d have players who are at end of their career who we can’t sell so we end up having to release and sign some more. It’s not sustainable. If you believe in the clubs new transfer policy, ie signing younger players from outside of England because you can 1) develop and sell and 2) they’re cheaper, then you have to be patient.

Hayden, specifically, yes, I’d rather we’d have signed Hayden above some others we’ve brought in. Just the player we needed for a decent, successful team - and that’s just as important for sustainability as bringing in young or cheap players to sell for profit IF WE CAN. We’ve seen flashes from Saito and Dembele but I don’t want to be patient all the way to League 1.

We couldn’t have paid him big money though, I get that, but as a player ‘with no sell on’ he was still worth having.

There has to be a balance James can’t just sign kids.
Yes you might sign an older player with reduced resale value but if that experience keeps you up then it’s paid itself back.
The blend is what’s key in my eyes and I feel we have gone to far to one side this window whilst I get the logic behind it you still have to remain competitive.

Yeah I agree on the balance but with Cook, Dunne, Field and JCS haven’t we got a strong and experienced spine to the side? Stick Colback in there too. The right back signings are odd but those aside I think the others make sense.

Cook and colback only ones I would class as proper experienced imo

Field and Dunne have played over 100 games in championship. Field over 150.

And I know Chair has been injured but he’s played over 200 games for us. Also Fox is experienced. But again he’s been injured. We need Chair, Cook, Field, Colback, Dunne to step up as rest of team is inexperienced.

This debate shows why we keep coming back to Hayden. His signing could have made all the difference, WITHOUT compromising on the club's philosophy of getting the balance of youth and experience. However that ship has sailed now and we need to make the best of what we have. Hence showing patience, which won't result in relegation but just a rocky start to the season imo. Experienced players on their way back from injury is at least encouraging.

Experienced players on their way back from injury is at least encouraging. Think you are spot on about Hayden, even if as a fan base we are guilty of thinking x player that’s missing would make the decisive difference. Second half of last season our “back seven” players if you like were a rock - it was in attack we were weak. If everyone fit and up to speed our attacking four now much better. But the balance is just a bit wrong and Hayden - or someone like him - was pivotal. Think a lot of how we do till Jan and whether we do get suckered into a bit of a relegation scrap is how quickly and well Varane can develop and/ or how often Colback can start (and finish). That and playing Jimmy at right back.

Was accused of going too early on Madsen but does anyone still seriously think there is a Championship player in there?
