detriment of the British game It´s the same all over the world, I think. Must be tough teaching kids anything these days. I agree. I just mentioned British because it used to be a characteristic of one of our nation's biggest strengths. Foreign clubs and countries used to fear and respect us for it. Tarbie's point about the current snowflake generation is likely indicative of the issue though.

Why is that though? What's happened to the strong characters of that ilk? Those types of leaders and players are sorely missed, and it's to the detriment of the British game imo. Not only were they tough leaders of men, but technically excellent too. In my opinion this is not something that is specific to football. Generation snowflake don't respond well to a no nonsense leadership style. Parenting has a big role to play in this too; not just schools.

Think the captaincy will be part of Austins deal to join the club.

Think the captaincy will be part of Austins deal to join the club. Does a captain earn more?

Think the captaincy will be part of Austins deal to join the club. not sure being captain makes any difference to any deal. You can have 10k less a week or You can have the armband. Only mad person would say armband please. Armband is just tossed in as an extra Think was suggested Wallace not ideal candidate as won’t play week in week out and we saw this season Charlie plays to 60mins or gets rest periods on bench so would we argue he’s same bracket as Wallace. Both good players and would be candidates but due to bodies need to be managed and nursed through the season

I’d much rather player/coach was the deal. Work with the strikers.

Gone are the days of Keane, Adams, Terry and the like. Why is that though? What's happened to the strong characters of that ilk? Those types of leaders and players are sorely missed, and it's to the detriment of the British game imo. Not only were they tough leaders of men, but technically excellent too. What's happened is that the nancyball that the game has become has killed off those guys. I wouldn't want to return to the days of assassins like Harris, Hunter and the like, but you can't even have a Derry now and expect him to stay on the field without someone holding their face if he walked past them.

Westy reckons the captain's role in the modern game is no more than a coin tosser. Does this thread and poll suggests otherwise? What are people's views on this subject and the importance of a captain? I agree with Westy to some extent - Henderson would be Henderson whoever was captain but I think you get more captains, and need one less, the better the team is. At our level and below there is still room for a manager on the pitch, someone to set an example and inspire others when heads go down, someone to kick arse. Westy likes someone who takes control of the game - that's the best role for a captain.

I haven't been following pre-season as the games have clashed with my plans for watching the British Lions. Who's been wearing the armband so far?

Saw Dykes had it for a bit after subs.
I imagine Barbet will be the main man, didn't he end with it last season?

Wasn’t expecting that but makes sense. Proven winner who knows how to get out of the division. Well liked and respected by all. That will Do 👍🏻

Field in defence sounds like a proper master stroke to me if he plays in there again Make him the captain too Good call by Gareth giving Martin the armband IMO. Then returning it to Stef when he came on. I would prefer it stays with the more experienced players, like he's doing. GA has obviously detected leadership qualities in Martin and it showed he took on the responsibility well on Saturday.
