It is interesting what is going on with the development squad and all things Heston.
We all know the history of the gap between the B Team and the First team and how few players have made the upgrade, the feud between Warburton and the coaches etc. But very quietly, one by one, the coaches are going, the B team did better last year than of recent times, the brave decision to release the players closest to making the step-up, and then attracting a crop of new youngsters, selling them the great facilities and the 'pathway' to the first team.
I think that they will get a year to develop, and if they are not close to breaking in to at least the squad, they will be released again, and a new crop trialed.
I think that the same will happen down the age groups.
Roco Friel represents another plank in the new strategy. Identifying talent and being prepared to pay development fees and offering a 4 year contract. The fact that for a change we have been told the duration, suggests that this is a statement of future intent. 'We are prepared to pay and commit to young potential'. It remains to be seen if Roco will be fast tracked through to get our return on investment.
But the days of the occasional Kakay, joining at 9, working through the various age squads to the first team, are probably long gone now. It is now mainly about attracting external talent from far afield like Burnley and Edinburgh.
Seems very sensible to me.
